october's garden chores; plus, win 'saving the season' new preserving guide

Greetings!

I got faked out by early bouts of cold, but the cusp of fall is always that way: fickle, and a bit of a tease. Today it's summery, but in the face of high-30s nights last month, I stashed tender tropicals when perhaps I could have waited, though better safe than sorry, right? Now if I can just get the rest of the harvest put up before the serious cleanup begins -- all part of October's mad juggling act that makes it rival spring as the year's busiest garden month here in Zone 5B.

Hopefully, the October Garden Chores will help guide the way!

(and get lots of preserving tips now)

Southern California-based but Southeast-bred Kevin West strikes me at once as a very modern and also a very old-fashioned guy -- a great combination to my mind. Quotes from the classical Roman poet Virgil open the chapters in his new hit book, "Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling and Preserving," which is also loaded with old-fashioned fruits he hopes we haven't forgotten. But the recipes are smart, and the science and food safety is up-to-the-minute 21st century.  Kevin joined me on the radio -- and I bought some books to share, along with his best seasonal tips, and his apple-butter recipe. 2 more big book giveaways coming up!

P.S. -- I'm a little book-mad at the moment -- all part of the instinctive pull toward tucking in for the coming winter, I guess.

Besides Kevin's new preserving book, above, I have some other giveaways coming: "Moosewood Cookbook" Mollie Katzen's newest on Monday, and even sooner: "Eat, Pray, Love" author Liz Gilbert's new novel -- a botanical adventure tale with a plant-mad female lead character. Be on the lookout!
