yummy, jam-like tomatillo salsa; 6 things to do now for birds; win 'hot plants' book

Greetings!

The garden is giving back, as if to say thanks for all the care I've given it all season. "Take this," it says, offering up another load of bush beans, and then "Here you go," alerting me that there are more raspberries, too. Sunflowers are blooming madly, a target for goldfinches who just add to my enjoyment. Fall!

I voiced a longing for tomatillos at seed-catalog shopping time last winter, having skipped growing them for years, and now...well, let's just say I am lonesome no more. What to do with the many fruits, whose husks have filled out and then some? Seems that it depends who you ask -- even if you specifically state it's salsa that you have in mind. My tomatillo adventure.

6 things to do for birds this fall (and 2 for you!)

It's time for us humans to do a few bird-oriented chores, and also to engage with birds more fully. Here's how.
