650-visitor open day slideshow (egads!); another chance to win a new weed guide

the garden on saturday, from the window

Greetings!

Can anybody recommend a lawn-repair expert? That was my first thought after 650 sets of feet marched on the garden Saturday, 150 more than ever before, in my final Garden Conservancy Open Day of the 2013 visiting season.

I say "marched on the garden," because from an hour before official opening time, that's what it looked like: a march.

My second thought, though: What a great day! A recap, in a new slideshow.

knotweed, ragweed, bindweed...pests to tackle now!

An encore visit to my public-radio show and podcast by Teri Dunn Chace, author of "How to Eradicate Invasive Plants," happened just in the nick. Late summer and fall turn out to be the best time for getting the upper hand over a wide range of common weeds, including Japanese knotweed, ragweed, Ailanthus, bindweed, curly dock and more, so Teri helped us chart a focused course of action.

Get her tips, enter for another chance to win her book -- and just listen in as we gripe about weeds, and grapple with them together. All right here.
