must herbs; making romesco sauce (win 'vegetable literacy'); why are birds quieter?

Rofous hummingbird in mister by Alandra Palisser

Greetings!

The harvest is speeding up, with bigger hauls each day and week as plants reach their peak productivity in my garden. And just as that happens, the birds are quieting down -- and even starting to molt. Shall we take note of both happenings together at this midsummer moment, with two new stories full of tactical tips?

Deborah Madison and Vegetable Literacy

must herbs, and making romesco, with deborah madison

Despite that 1940s Harry Truman-ism, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen," that's exactly where harvest time sends us, especially if we grow our own edibles. Who better to ask for inspiration now than Deborah Madison -- often called the Julia Child of vegetarian cooking? Listen to our conversation (my newest podcast) and maybe win her latest book, "Vegetable Literacy." You'll get wisdom on her must-have garden herbs; a recipe for versatile, rich-in-a-good-way Romesco sauce; and even Deborah's unexpected secret weapon for gopher control. All right here.

the dawn chorus quiets, but what are birds up to?

Wonder why the living alarm clock outside your open window -- the one that's been awakening you at 4-something A.M. since spring arrived -- isn't sounding? What suddenly happened to the insistent dawn chorus of birds? Turns out many of them are busy with other things, says Ellen Blackstone of the popular BirdNote public-radio show. What's they're up to (including molting, like the cardinal above, or bathing like the ufous hummingbird up top) -- and what we can offer them right now, all by clicking here.

P.S. --  Wow! Thanks to all of you who responded to my last newsletter by ordering a copy of my book THE BACKYARD PARABLES -- the book "Eat, Pray, Love" author Liz Gilbert called "a blessing" when she read it.

I'm extending the special on signed copies (and there's a e-book and an audio version, too); all the details are here.
