win a new weed-fighting handbook; unusual broccolis like spigarello to sow now

piracicaba and spigarello keep on producing

Greetings!

A local bear keeps breaking open holes in my fence, and as if they're in cross-species cahoots and he's her doorman, a large doe then walks right through. With a neighbor's help, I escort the deer out; we fix the fence...and the scenario repeats itself! Frustrating -- and hilarious! But enough "Animal Planet" complaints; let's get down to business:

a new guidebook to help us in the weed war (win it!)

new weed handbook to win
Yes, they can make you feel violent, author Teri Dunn Chace admits about weeds in "How to Eradicate Invasive Plants." In fact, if authors named their own books, this new one might have been called, "The War of the Weeds."

But in that "two wrongs don't make a right" way of thinking, Teri reminds us that getting out the big guns isn't where to begin. Understanding who you're up against, and being strategic, is. We had a lively conversation on the latest radio show and podcast -- and I've bought two copies of her book to share.

Most important: Teri shared tactics for dealing with some of the toughest opponents, from Japanese knotweed to goutweed and more. All right here.

cut-and-come-again broccoli cousins to sow right now

leaves of spigarello leaf broccoliI've been experimenting with a wider palette of brassicas, those good-for-you plants in the mustard family, a.k.a. cruciferous vegetables, or cole crops. Lately, I've focused on cousins that are easier to grow in the Northeast than conventional broccoli with its large central head. Bigger isn't always better (see that lovely half-cup-sized beauty above?) I had such good results from new-to-me, long-producing types like spigarello (above) and 'Purple Peacock' that I'm sowing more -- now -- to insure a steady supply into latest fall. Can I entice you try some?
