December 2013

Dear Friends,

The past two months at BSML have been active and buoyant as students participated in both their English studies and in various extracurricular activities.

December began as students and staff decorated the building in preparation for the Christmas holiday. An ornament-laden Christmas tree now stands in the lobby, welcoming students and visitors. A few early winter snowstorms have added to the holiday feeling and caused excitement and amazement among the students who were seeing snow for the first time.

The end of a four-week term concluded last Friday with the BSML annual Christmas celebration. George and the students in his choral elective gave a beautiful performance of holiday music. Cris, along with  Shunsuke and Ayano from Japan, formed a trio who played and sang some popular songs.  Yun Peng from China sang an opera aria and Ye Eun  from South Korea played the gayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument. BSML is fortunate to have such talented teachers and students! Following the musical performances, students had the opportunity to exchange "Secret Santa" gifts with one another, and to have their picture taken with Santa. The celebration ended as graduates received their certificates and wished each other good luck in their future endeavors.

We wish all BSML students and alumni a happy holiday season and we look forward with great anticipation to new experiences and opportunities in 2014.

We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter.

Winter Children's Program

Children
Children's Program

Following last winter's success, next month, we are offering again our Winter Children's Program in January and February. Although the weather may be colder, the children still enjoy the same creative learning activities that combine grammar and vocabulary instruction with craft projects and interactive games. Last week, our children proudly displayed their snowmen made of paper plates and cotton balls on the wall outside their classroom. There has been little snow this year, but we hope that, before long, the children will have the  opportunity to build a real snowman in front of the school.

The children's program includes a weekly field trip to a place of interest to young people, including the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium.

This program offers families the opportunity to live and study together in Boston during a season of great beauty and charm in New England.

BSML Student, Basil Alquwayi

Basil Alquwayi

On the 18th of February 2013, a plane coming from Saudi Arabia landed here at Logan International Airport, Boston. When I got off the plane I was sad and excited at the same time. I was sad that I had to say goodbye to my beloved ones, my mom, dad brothers and sisters, and last but not least my friends in Saudi Arabia. But I was excited, so excited about the whole new life of adventures that I am about to get into. Mixing up in a new culture, meeting with and making new friends and living a totally new different life style. Basically, it was a whole new life for me. My first week in Boston flew by working on papers for my scholarship and getting ready for the 6 years journey from English student to college student. On February 25th, one week after my arrival in Boston, I had my first day here at Boston School of Modern Languages (BSML). I still remember my steps from that tunnel coming from the Roslindale Square walking towards BSML. I remember when I was looking at the school and it was in the early morning when I met my first two classmates. They later became my friends, Khalid Alhazmi from Saudi Arabia and Felipe from Brazil. Since that time I've met a lot of great people who changed me into a better man; great friends, teachers, host families, and school staff. I made really strong global friendships with many people from around the world: Japan, Turkey, Spain, Venezuela, China,  and many other countries. Since my arrival, I have learned a lot. My English has improved, and I have started to believe that I have adapted to this new life 100% :) And I will never forget the great people from the staff who helped me a lot and stood by my side when I needed help with many issues that might face any international student. Barbara, Rick, Zlatko and last but not least, Eileen. I really want to name everybody at the school and thank them for everything they did for me. Two great teachers that I look to as great friends of mine, Adam and Dave. Thanks a lot for everything you two taught me in your classes. BSML is a unique school with its unique environment. And now I am packing up my luggage, going to Arizona State University, the second stop on my journey. While writing this article, I wish for everyone happy beautiful holidays.

Your BSML Team - Cris Kenudson

Cris Kenudson

Cris Kenudson has been teaching at BSML for two years. He has a Master's degree in TESOL and taught English for many years in Japan. Cris especially enjoys teaching BSML's TOEFL and Business English electives. When not in the classroom teaching, Cris can be found in the cafeteria playing table tennis (He belongs to a club), or strumming on his Autoharp. Our December graduation featured a musical performance by Cris and two of his students.

Cris says that, "The diversity of students here at BSML is amazing! I love it that I can meet and talk with students from countries in Asia, Europe and South America, for example, all in the same day. It's like taking a trip around the world!"

English Tips from Our Teachers

Bob's Grammar Tips

We can usually make statements clear by not omitting the word "that" from noun and adjective clauses:
Examples:
I knew she knew Maria./ I knew that she knew Maria,
I read the book you read./ I read the book that you read.

Use "while", not "when", with the past continuous tense:
Example: Tony fell asleep while the teacher was explaining the lesson.

Sandra 's Vocabulary Words

"Pricey" is a colloquial word that means expensive:
Example: I love Barbara's new apartment, but it is a bit pricey.

"Crucial" means very important:
Example: He made a crucial mistake when he insulted Laura: now she never wants to see him again!

Ines' Idioms

"Not exactly" suggests the opposite:
Example:
I like that restaurant, but it's not exactly cheap. (It's expensive)
Be careful! That dog is not exactly friendly!

"To run rings around" indicates superiority:
Example:
Pamela's cooking runs rings around her sister's.
Linda thinks that New York runs rings around Paris.

Best wishes, on behalf of everyone on the BSML Team,

Thomas Smith
