December 2012

Dear Friends,

The past two months at BSML have been dynamic and festive as students engaged in both their English studies and in various extracurricular activities.

During November, Eileen facilitated a few cooperative cooking classes.  During one class, the group baked large, crisp chocolate chip cookies. On another occasion, the class baked an autumn apple pie. The BSML Thanksgiving lunch united students, teachers, and staff together for a sumptuous and memorable meal.

December began as students and staff decorated the building in preparation for the Christmas holiday. A towering Christmas tree, adorned with lights and red ribbons, now stands in the lobby as a warm welcome to students and visitors. Last Friday, the close of a four-week term culminated with the BSML annual Christmas celebration. Students were treated to a delightful choral performance, as well as to a reading of Clement Clark Moore's, "A Night Before Christmas" by Eileen. Following the performance and reading, students had the opportunity to exchange "Secret Santa" gifts with one another, and to pose for a picture with Santa, who graciously attended the event despite a hectic schedule. The celebration ended as graduates received their certificates and bade each other farewell and good luck.

We at BSML look back at 2012 with great gratitude for the wonderful experiences and successes we have shared. We also look forward to 2013 with great hope for continued learning and achievement.

We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter.

Winter Children's Program

Children
Children's Program

Following last winter's success, next month, we are offering again our Winter Children's Program in January and February. Although the weather may be colder, the children still enjoy the same creative learning activities that combine grammar and vocabulary instruction with craft projects and interactive games. Last week, our children proudly displayed their snowmen made of paper plates and cotton balls on the wall outside their classroom. There has been little snow this year, but we hope that, before long, the children will have the  opportunity to build a real snowman in front of the school.

The children's program includes a weekly field trip to a place of interest to young people, including the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium.

This program offers families the opportunity to live and study together in Boston during a season of great beauty and charm in New England.

BSML Student, Henrique Arjona

Henrique Arjona

My name is Henrique, and I'm from Bebedouro in Brazil. I'm a university student, and I worked part-time for almost one year before I came to the U.S. I'm almost a graduate student, so I decided to study abroad with an eye toward improving my English skills and discovering new strengths and abilities in me.

I chose Boston because I know that it is one of the most important educational capitals in America. I'm a sport fan, especially soccer, and Boston provides a chance to watch football, basketball, baseball, and hockey games.

Why did I choose BSML? I heard about BSML by word of mouth. My travel agent said that if I were looking for a school where I would be treated like a son in a big family, BSML would be my school. When I arrived here in the summer BSML was crowded, but I received the red carpet treatment anyway. I've been here for four months and I've felt at ease since my first month. Being here became easy because everybody works with a smile on their face, from the person who cleans, to the owner. I'm having the time of my life in Boston, especially at BSML. I have met people who I never thought I would meet one day. I made friends, learned about new cultures and realized that the world is much bigger than I imagined.

Last but not least, I'd like to thank the teachers for sharing their knowledge with us, and not only for teaching us, but also for making our days unique: by being funny and friendly. I'll miss it! Also, I'm grateful for the assistance and friendship that the staff has provided me.

I'm so glad for being part of this family - BSML's family.

As a native of Boston, Eileen enjoys welcoming students from around the world and seeing their progress with the English Language while they are here.

English Tips from Our Teachers

Bob's Grammar Tips

When using who or what to ask about the subject of a sentence, use positive word order in the question.

Examples:
A: Who made these cookies? They're delicious.
B:  Karen did.

A: What caused the accident?
B: The weather may have caused it.

Sandra 's Vocabulary Words

A statement that is plausible is believable or likely to be true.

Example: He gave a plausible explanation for his absence.

Ines' Idioms

If something happens in the nick of time, it happens at the last possible minute, just before it's too late.

The snowstorm started a few minutes after we got home. We got home in the nick of time.
We got to the theater in the nick of time. The show started as we were taking our seats.

Best wishes, on behalf of everyone on the BSML Team,

Thomas Smith
