National HIV Testing Day

The Florida Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS recognizes June 27th as National HIV Testing Day. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. are living with HIV and don't know it. On this day, people are urged to get tested for HIV and to encourage family and friends to do the same. One of the most important steps in preventing HIV is getting tested and knowing your status. For more information on HIV/AIDS visit Florida's We Make the Change website.

The new Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE) is preparing to launch this month!  I have been serving on the founding board of INIE and am excited about the potential this Institute has for our community.  It is a local nonprofit that will be housed at the downtown TCC Capitol Center (formerly known as the Brogan Museum).  TCC is spearheading the effort with its resources but the organization will belong to the community. Two training series, one for board governance and one for fund development are slated for the fall. Watch for more to come.

I recently returned from a stimulating 3-day training conference in Atlanta for information and referral organizations sponsored by AIRS (Alliance of Information and Referral Systems).  More than 600 participants shared ideas about new programs and technology for 2-1-1 services and other specialized hotline providers.  We hope to bring these practices to the Big Bend in the near future.  Many focus on client assessment/intake, referral, follow-up coordination, resource databases and contact center technology (i.e., Chat, Text, Telephony).  More to come...

Congratulations to Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Big Bend for being the recipient of the 2014 Chamber Awards Nonprofit of the Year!  In 2013 that Award was presented to 2-1-1 Big Bend.  This recognition has been important to us and I'm sure it will be beneficial to BBBS too!

Remember, we are now working with the Summer Break Spot and helping families access free food sites for their children during the summer.  Pass the word about 2-1-1 and this service.

I am proud to be a Tallahassee native. Throughout my career, I have been honored to work in various government agencies and to be a part of the political process that drives Tallahassee.

As a member of this community, I feel it is my responsibility to serve in a capacity that allows needs to be met when they are most critical for those in need.

Thank You for the opportunity to serve as a board member to the agency that provides services to our community any time of any day.

2-1-1 Big Bend is proud to have Quincee join our agency family.

Hurricane Season: Early Emergency Prepardness

A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more.  Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes, which add to the destructiveness of the storm. Floods and flash floods generated by torrential rains also cause damage and loss of life.

2-1-1 Big Bend coordinates with Big Bend COAD (Community and Organizations Active in Disaster) Throughout the year, especially during hurricane season. Groups of social service organizations, government agencies, and faith communities stress the importance of preparing now. Even though the Big Bend area has been lucky the past several years, it doesn't take a full-strength hurricane to cause a catastrophic event.
To learn more about how to prepare, visit www.haveahurricaneplan.com

Before, during and after an event, you can dial  2-1-1 for non-life threatening services and information. During events, 2-1-1 Big Bend's Emergency page will remain active as well with updates such as sand bag and shelter locations.
Start preparing now!
