Greetings!

Randy Nicklaus, President

Our staff have been canvassing all the counties in our Big Bend service area this month to increase awareness of our Helpline 2-1-1 program and to share promotional materials. We are excited by the positve receptions we have received from United Way of the Big Bend funding panels in each county as well as from social service agencies, government offices, schools, media and other organizations. It's a big task to visit all of these groups and share our program information, but it is important to help our communities learn about the 24/7 hotline services we can provide to them.

We have small 2-1-1 Big Bend wallet cards to hand out to prospective callers. They describe how we help and that we are free, confidential and callers can remain anonymous. If your organization would like some for your reception desk or to give to your members, please let us know and we'll provide them to you.

Our new board officers for FY13-14 are: Al Pasini, Chair; Polly White, Chair-Elect; Andre Holmes, Vice Chair/ Treasurer; and Maurine Jones, Secretary.  We have a very enthusiastice board and I am eager to work with them during the coming year!

2-1-1 Big Bend had reason to celebrate recently as our most recent
summer class of Volunteer Hotline Counselors just graduated from training! Twenty-seven dedicated volunteers finished roughly sixty hours of training on crisis counseling, and will soon begin answering our hotlines and helping our callers. These volunteers will eventually put in about 4,000-5,000 service hours counseling our callers through challenging situations and connecting them to human service agencies. Our volunteers come from all walks of life; students, state workers, university staff, attorneys, substance abuse counselors, etc. and we are very excited to have a new group of volunteers join us. The next time you call 2-1-1 or tell a friend about it, know that the call is being taken by a caring, dedicated, well-trained counselor.

Board Member Spotlight

2-1-1 Big Bend Welcomes New Board Member

Leslie Snyder

Executive Assistant, Global Outreach

Florida Chamber of Commerce

I am a native, 4th generation Floridian and have a rewarding job at Florida Chamber of Commerce focused on the creation of international trade opportunities and global outreach.

Although I have known of 2-1-1 Big Bend for many years, I was not aware of the wide array of services and referrals that it provided to members of our community experiencing almost any kind of crisis.. emotional, medical, domestic, or financial.  The time that I am spending with the knowledeable and compassionate hotline volunteers has truly opened my eyes to how may of our neighbors are expriencing challenges in their lives- and how 2-1-1 Big Bend connects them with the assistance they need.

I want people to know how 2-1-1 Big Bend can serve them as a source of assistance, comfort and hope in their darkest hours; that there are people who do care about them when they feel completly alone and without hope.
