2-1-1 Big Bend News

March 2013

Greetings!  ,
Randy Photo
Randy Nicklaus, President

Happy St. Patricks Week!

Last month we celebrated our 10th Anniversary as a 2-1-1 service in Tallahassee.  On National 2-1-1 Day (February 11th) about 75 people joined us at Food Glorious Food to network and thank the staff and board for their milestone.  Since 2003, the agency has assisted more than 565,000 people who have called our hotlines (all programs); and, calls to the Helpline 2-1-1 program have doubled to an average of 2,000 per month.

In 2012, more than 240 organizations in the US provided 2-1-1 services to their communities.  This includes 16  in our state that serve all Florida counties with 2-1-1 services. According to the annual survey of all 2-1-1 programs, there were more than 16 million reported problems and needs from hotline callers that were addressed.  The most prevalent need category was related to housing and utilities (27%) followed by food and meals (15%).  Health care represented 7% of the needs and mental health and addictions accounted for 5%.  2-1-1 programs now serve about 90% of the US population.  This network has grown quickly since the 2-1-1 number was designated for community information and referral purposes by the Federal Communications Commission in July 2000.

I am very proud of our staff, board and volunteers for their work in 2012.  Nearly 54,000 callers were assisted and 117 volunteers (including interns)  contributed 14,953 hours to our agency.  This was an 8% increase of volunteer time during 2012!

P.S.  On Saturday, April 27, 2013 our annual fundraising event - A Night in the Tropics - will be held at the Tallahassee Auto Museum.  Please join us for a fun evening and help support our hotline programs!  For more information visit our website or send me an email.

2-1-1 Big Bend Celebrated Ten Years of

 2-1-1 Services  on 2/11

Ten years ago the three digit 2-1-1 number was publicly launched in Tallahassee as an easy to remember number for the local 24/7 community hotline program formerly known as Telephone Counseling and Referral Service.  2-1-1 Big Bend celebrated  with our first Party with a Purpose event on February 11, 2013.  It was a great success thanks to board coordinators Pam Butler and Aigner George. Special thanks to Food Glorious Food for the venue and party hosts: Jerry Osteryoung, Nolia Brandt, Donna Smithey, Gil Ziffer, Steve Evans, Jennifer Rupert and all donors who supported this fabulous effort.
