2-1-1 Big Bend News |
January 2013 |
| Randy Nicklaus, President |
Greetings!
It's 2013 and we are eager to get the year started with trainings and celebrations! In January we will begin our Spring Holtine Volunteer Training Class. See the next article for details. Last year our staff trained 91 volunteers to answer our hotlines. Total volunteer time donated to agency services amounted to 14,953 hours and included hotline volunteers, interns, and program volunteers. Plus, eighteen board members contributed countless hours to raise funds and provide guidance for the agency. Without our volunteers, we would not have a viable 24/7 hotline service. Thanks to all!
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the public launch of our 2-1-1 three-digit number and our name change from Telephone Counseling & Referral Service (TCRS) to 2-1-1 Big Bend. The official "birthday" is February 11 (2/11) - get it?! We will conduct an ASIST suicide prevention workshop that week (see below) plus share many stories about our important work with the community. Keep your ears and eyes open for those stories.
We are still putting together details for our annual hotline reports from 2012 but I can say that we helped more than 50,000 callers on our various hotlines. We also had nearly 20,000 visitors to our online resource directories and helped our community and State by contributing services to several collaborative efforts.
Without our community partners, funders and donors we could not make these impacts. Thanks to everyone for your contributions to this success!

Volunteer Spotlight
Alan Tudor
Following my retirement and two-year service in the U.S. Peace Corps (Cape Verde), I was looking for a local opportunity to continue my commitment to volunteerism. I found that as a volunteer hotline counselor at 2-1-1 Big Bend. But I found much more than just an opportunity to volunteer. Being a part of the 2-1-1 family has taught me a new appreciation for the meaning of community service.
As hotline counselors we provide callers with free, confidential counseling, crisis intervention, information and referrals. Not only has this expanded my knowledge and awareness of the resources and services available in the Big Bend area, this experience has given me great satisfaction and fulfillment in knowing that I am helping to make a significant difference in the lives of so many people.
This could only be made possible through the excellent training each volunteer trainee receives from the professional staff at 2-1-1. In return, volunteers are asked to complete a 200-hour commitment in service. This month marks my completion of that 200-hour commitment. I look forward to continuing to share the community benefits of 2-1-1 Big Bend in 2013. |
