Welcome to the September 2015 edition of the Sandy Springs E-Newsletter, a publication that highlights news and events happening within the City. SANDY SPRINGS FESTIVAL - 30 YEARS OF CELEBRATING COMMUNITY & TRADITION
Heritage Sandy Springs is proud to present the 30th Annual Sandy Springs Festival, returning to the heart of Sandy Springs, offering fine art, live music, cultural performances, a pet parade, Chalk Walk Art Competition, 10K and 5K race, children's programming, classic rides, gourmet and festival food options, and much more. Festival dates and hours are Saturday, September 19, 2015, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 20, 2014, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 for Adults (age 18+) and $2 for kids (ages 6 - 17). Free entry for children ages 5 and under, as well as Heritage Sandy Springs Members. Two-day passes are also available for adults ($7) and kids ($3). Tickets are not pre-sold and are available at the Festival gates. 
CITY LAUNCHES WEBSITE DEVOTED TO PLANNING FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS
As part of its commitment to community engagement in developing the city over the next ten years, the City has branded the effort and will launch a new website devoted to the project. www.thenext10.org will contain background information on the city and the planning process. The Next Ten planning team will also host input sessions online, providing the community opportunities to give feedback on specific topics and share thoughts as the planning progresses. Community thought will be gauged through regularly rotating poll questions. Meeting notices will also be posted on the website's calendar.
MARTA ROUTE 148 UPDATE 
MARTA recently initiated a revised Route 148 serving weekday commute trips and travels between the Sandy Springs MARTA station and the Northside Drive/Powers Ferry area via Mount Vernon Road. Here's a link to the revised public timetable, which includes arrival/departure times and a map.
SSPD VEHICLE WINS DESIGN CONTEST
The Sandy Springs Police Department claimed first place in the 2015 Law & Order Magazine Vehicle Design Contest. The City won first place in the "Municipal Over Fifty Officers" category. SSPD vehicles have a distinct presence, recognizable throughout the metro area.  Vehicles are black to match the SSPD officers' uniform color. A blue line associates with the Thin Blue Line, to commemorate fallen officers, also symbolizing the relationship of police in the community as protectors of the citizenry. 
SUPPORT THE LOCAL HEROES THAT PROTECT US
The Sandy Springs Police Benevolent Fund is hosting its fall fundraiser on Saturday, September 26, 2015. This year's event will feature raffles, a live auction, music, food and more.  Tickets are  $100 per person.  Since 2014, SSPBF has provided $27,000 in assistance to public safety families in times of need.  Last year, the SSPBF made possible an additional life insurance policy for SSPD officers. Tickets are available online at SSPBF.org, Participants in the 2015 Charity Golf Tournament may attend this event for free, but should RSVP

MOVIES BY MOONLIGHT 

Don't miss this year's last Movies By Moonlight! Leadership Sandy Springs makes this family-oriented, community event possible and each year, more than 5,000 Sandy Springs residents come out to check out this wonderful open air series. The event begins at 6 p.m. with food trucks and the movie starts at dusk.

THE CITY'S FIRST ANNUAL KICKOFF COOKOUT
On August 30, Savor Sandy Springs, the City's Restaurant Association, in collaboration with the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber, Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism, and presenting sponsor - Gas South, hosted the city's first annual Kickoff Cookout. The tailgate event featured more than a dozen local restaurants, live music fun and more. Here's a video snapshot from the event. Stay tuned for Restaurant Week which comes up in November!

LAST MONTH FOR STAND UP PADDLEBOARD DEMO CLASSES AND YOGA CLASSES


Try to take summer into extra innings by trying out the fastest growing water sport in the country - Stand Up Paddleboard. SUP Demo students will learn the basic techniques for a safe, enjoyable evening using hard boards and inflatable boards. SUP Yoga students will be guided through a brief paddle instruction and led out to a cove where boards are anchored for a 60-90 minute yoga practice. Classes are open to all ages, and all levels of students; however, it is recommended that students have basic knowledge of yoga. 

When: Through September, SUP Demo Classes Thursday 6:30-8:00 p.m., SUP Yoga Classes Sunday 9-11:30 or Thursday 6:30-8:00 p.m.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! 
ACT3 PRODUCTION ANNOUNCES LINE UP
Act3 Productions is pleased to announce its 2015-16 season series. The fun begins with Ruthless, The Musical, followed by Guys and Dolls, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Dogfight, and ends with Moon Over Buffalo. All shows are performed at Act3 Playhouse, Sandy Springs Plaza, 6285-R Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
Calling all Photographers! The Metro North Georgia Water Planning District is seeking entries in its photography contest. Deadline for entries is September 12, 2015. The annual event is to highlight the need to protect our shared water resources. Winning photographers receive a cash prize and inclusion in the 2016 Water Reflections Calendar. SEPTIC TANK UPDATE
If your home has a septic system, be sure to keep it maintained and working properly.  Poorly functioning septic tanks can cost thousands of dollars to repair and allow water that contains harmful bacteria and high levels of pollutants to leak into the ground which could eventually contaminate our rivers, lakes and streams. THIS YEAR'S LAST CONCERTS BY THE SPRINGS - BANKS AND SHANE!

Hometown favorites, Banks and Shane will wrap up this year's outdoor concert series. Concerts by the Springs is free and open to the public and located at Heritage Green on The Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn, 6110 Bluestone Road, Sandy Springs, Georgia. 

  • Sunday, September 6, 2015  from  7 - 8:30 p.m

Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early and picnic with family and friends. Gates open at 5 p.m.  Blankets and coolers are welcomed; no outside tables permitted. Pets and smoking are not allowed. MEET US AT THE FARMERS MARKET 

In addition to a great selection of fresh food and produce, the Heritage Sandy Springs Farmers Market is a terrific place to meet up with old friends and be introduced to new.  The Market is located at Century Springs East parking Lot, 6110 Lake Forrest Drive (corner of Mt Vernon Highway and Lake Forrest Drive). WE CELEBRATE NEW BUSINESSES, NEW LOCATIONS AND ANNIVERSARIES 
RIBBON CUTTING AT RIO BRAVO 
Mayor Paul and Councilmen Bauman and Paulson, along with a State Representative Joe Wilkinson were among the dignitaries formally welcoming Rio Bravo back to the neighborhood. The restaurant can be found on Powers Ferry Road. 
RIBBON CUTTING AT HOMEWOOD SUITES
Members of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce joined the team at Homewood Suites Perimeter Center at their grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony. Located on Crestline Parkway (off of Mount Vernon Highway), this new extended stay hotel offers different floor plans and a variety of amenities including a fitness area, indoor pool and terrace with fire pit.
RIBBON CUTTING AT HOLY INNOCENTS SCHOOL
Mayor Paul helped cut the ribbon at Holy Innocents Episcopal School's new upper school. One of the largest Episcopalian parish schools in the country, Holy Innocents' has an enrollment of 1,375 with students ranging from 3 years of age through grade 12.

Members of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce participated in Krauthammer's ribbon cutting this afternoon. Located at One Lakeside Commons, Krauthammer is an international consulting company that provides training for employee engagement.
