Be sure to mark your calendar for Monday, January 19, 2015, The City's MLK Day Celebration begins at 10 a.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. In addition to announcing the recipient of the Humanitarian Award, the keynote speaker will be M. Alexis Scott, former publisher of Atlanta Daily World. The program is open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. 
CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING EVENT ADDS CLOTHING AND COOKING OIL

Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful's Christmas tree recycling event, "Bring One for the Chipper," has been a holiday tradition in Georgia for more than 20 years and is expanding to include clothing that will be donated to American Kidney Services, as well as cooking oil that will be recycled into biodiesel.

Drop-off day is Saturday, January 3, 2015 at The Home Depot, 6400 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, and also at the Sandy Springs Recycling Center at 470 Morgan Falls Road.  Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please remove decorations and lights before dropping off trees.The mulch will be used for playgrounds, public beautification projects, wildlife habitat and homeowner landscaping projects. SANDY SPRINGS POLICE AWARDED $70,400 GRANT FOR LOCAL DUI ENFORCEMENT

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety has announced that the Sandy Springs Police Department is one of 17 law enforcement agencies in Georgia to receive a Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic grant for the 2015 grant season. Referred to as a H.E.A.T. grant, Sandy Springs Police Department's award totals $70,400.

The goal of the H.E.A.T. program is to combat crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving and speeding, while also increasing seatbelt use and educating the public about traffic safety and the dangers of DUI. GRANTS AWARDED

The Sandy Springs City Council recently approved financial support to nine non-profit organizations as part of the City's Serving Sandy Springs program. The non-profit funding program was established to provide a consistent response from the City to requests for financial and non-financial resources on behalf of non-profit organizations. Organizations receiving funding: 

  • Act 3 Productions, Inc. ($6,250) - to support production of three, stage-plays for the 2014-15 season. The requested funds will support the productions with program supplies, contracted professional services related to those programs, and fees such as theatrical rights, scripts etc.
  • Am Yisrael Chai ($3,250) - to support a Holocaust remembrance event on January 25, 2015, which will include a community presentation, candle lighting ceremony, and an exhibit to be displayed at the Anne Frank in the World Exhibit.
  • Art Sandy Springs ($3,750) - supports the production of the 2015 ShowStoppers event, a talent competition for area youth.
  • Friends of North Springs ($5,000) - supports the school's theatre tech department by upgrading outdated equipment.
  • Friends of Benson ($10,000) - funding will upgrade one outdoor bocce court at the Dorothy Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex, which hosts regular bocce lessons and quarterly tournaments through the facility's fitness program.
  • Heritage Sandy Springs ($2,645) - supports the 2015 Storytelling Festival, in collaboration with the Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, the Southern Order of Storytellers and PeachSeed Youth Storytelling festivals, with a four-hour event comprised of performances, hands-on workshops and participatory youth workshops.
  • Keep North Fulton Beautiful ($5,775) - to fund the purchase of a "bulb eater" machine to recycle fluorescent bulbs. 
  • Mary Hall Freedom House ($2,500) - to support workshop costs, supplies and classroom materials for its WorkNOW initiative providing job readiness training, computer literacy, GED preparation and employment assistance.
  • Sandy Springs Education Force ($10,736) - to fund the After School All Star Program for economically disadvantaged students.

The Sandy Springs Police Department sponsors monthly safety classes at no cost. Here's the schedule for January 2015: 
  • Women's Self-Defense Class Thursday, January 8, 2015 6-8 p.m. at SSPD
  • Firearms Safety Class - Wednesday January 14, 2015, from 6-9 p.m. at the Sandy Springs Gun Range 
  • Teen Driving Class Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 6-8:15 at SSPD register for teen driving class  (registration is mandatory)

WINTER WEATHER - BE PREPARED!
Despite the unseasonably warmer temperatures, members of the City's of Public Works department are bracing for the winter and recently participated in snow plow training. Are you prepared? The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), urges Georgians to prepare for possible severe winter weather and offers advice through the Ready Georgia program. Last year, we kept residents and business owners updated on road conditions, closures and available resources through our social media channels. Please "like" us on Facebook and "follow" us on twitter to stay informed. 
BUSINESS LICENSE RENEWAL 
If you own a business in Sandy Springs, it's time to start thinking about that renewal paperwork. Reminders are in the mail, and you can find additional information on the business license and renewal page on the city's website.

SHAPING UP IN SANDY SPRINGS!
If one of your New Year's Resolutions is to get in shape, get active in Sandy Springs! The City's Recreation and Parks department offers classes along with miles of well-maintained trails to help you achieve your goals. ADAPTIVE RECREATION EXCEPTIONAL ADVENTURES

The Exceptional Adventures Activity Club, a monthly social-recreational program designed for children with special needs (ages 4-12), brings kids together for a fun and engaging time. Siblings can, and are encouraged to, participate and parents can drop off their children or stay and join the fun! 

The January Exceptional Adventures activity will be Gymnastics Activities & Games.

WHEN: January 31, 2015 Saturday 5:30-8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Hammond Park Gymnastics Center, 705 Hammond Dr.

WHO: Children with Special Needs Ages 4-12

MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS FOR THE SIXTH ANNUAL DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE 

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Daddy's and their little girls can have a night out on the town! The dance will feature music from both generations geared to the dads or father figures and daughters provided by a DJ.

Saturday, February 7, 2015, 6-8 p.m. 
Location: Spalding Drive Charter Elementary
Min/max Participants: 50/125
Cost: $35/daddy-daughter includes keepsake photo; $10 each additional daughter 

Event includes dance contests, musical games, complementary snacks and refreshments, keepsake photo, door prizes and a goodie bag for each girl. Attire is business casual to semi-formal. Registration is accepted on a first come, first serve basis until the event is full or February 6, 2015, whichever comes first. Open to all girls attending school in Sandy Springs. Spaces are limited so sign up early!

RIBBON CUTTING AT KAVALI PLASTIC SURGERY CENTER 
Mayor Paul and Councilman Sterling, along with members of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber, joined Dr. Carmen Kavali and her staff at the ribbon cutting ceremony of their new location, the Kavali Plastic Surgery and Skin Renewal Center at 6045 Barfield Road.
SEVEN HENS RESTAURANT OPENS IN SANDY SPRINGS
Mayor Paul and members of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce joined Michael Gurevich, the owner of Seven Hens, for the new restaurant's ribbon cutting ceremony. Located at Abernathy Square, the Sandy Springs restaurant is their second metro Atlanta location. 
TAZIKI'S CHECK PRESENTATION
Taziki's Mediterranean Grill recently presented a check for a $1,000 to the Rally Foundation. Rally, a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Atlanta, raises awareness and funds for childhood cancer research.
