City Council Considers Performing Arts Center for the New City Center 
A series of special-called City Council meetings and a public information open house unveiled the feasibility study for the inclusion of a performing arts center as part of the City Center development. Johnson Consulting, the firm commissioned by the City to present the various options, recommended the City explore a 750-1,000 seat facility, including adjoining lobby and meeting space to allow for multiple group use.   Please click here to review the presentation and to let us know what you think
 
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AND A SEASON FULL OF GREAT PROGRAMS!
Join us for a free community family gathering on National Night Out,
Tuesday, August 5 from 5-8 p.m. at Hammond Park.
There will be water-slides, inflatable playgrounds and hamburgers and hotdogs from the Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department. Sandy Springs Police and Fire and Rescue Departments will bring their vehicles for children to explore along with a special guest appearance from Mac, the Sandy Springs Fire Department clown!
Looking ahead to Fall, check out these programs and events from Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks:  Running Club, Adult Acrylic Painting classes, Kidzart Clay classes and new this year Cheerleading (Ages 4-18), Playball (Ages 2-9) and Yoga and Zumba for adults. For more information, visit:

SPECIAL CALLED CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO ADDRESS NATURAL RESOURCE PROTECTION

The City of Sandy Springs City Council will hold a specal called meeting on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 6 p.m. to discuss natural resource protection throughout the city. 

The special called meeting is intended to update the City Council on efforts currently underway in the areas of erosion and sediment control and stormwater, including recommendations to set more specific requirements related to single lot, single family development.  The meeting also will include a presentation on the City's tree canopy and recommended changes to maintain the current canopy.

The public will have an opportunity to comment.  The meeting will be held in Council Chambers located at City Hall at 7840 Roswell Road, Building 500, Sandy Springs, Ga. 30350. 

 

TEMPORARY CHANGES AT GA 400 AND NORTHRIDGE INTERCHANGE
Lane configuration changes are coming for those of you who drive GA 400/ Northridge Interchange. Beginning the first week of August and in place for approximately 4 weeks: Lane configuration changes will shift the SR400 northbound off & on ramp lanes east approximately 30 feet. Roberts Drive will be shifted to the east as well. The intersection of Roberts Drive and Northridge Road will be raised approximately two feet. Traffic will remain on the existing Northridge Road bridge, and there will only be one lane for through traffic onto Robert's Drive and for left turns into the Northridge neighborhoods. Please drive carefully as these alignment changes are bound to catch some motorists by surprise.
REMINDER:  POWERS FERRY ROAD CONSTRUCTION WITH ROAD CLOSURE 
Construction crews are working to install  storm sewer pipes and paving Powers Ferry Road. Powers Ferry Road will be closed to through traffic from just south of Eppington Drive to Whitmere Court through October. 

Detour Route: Heading south on Powers Ferry Road, take Stella Drive to Dudley Lane back to Powers Ferry Road. Heading north on Powers Ferry Road, take Dudley Lane to Stella Drive back to Powers Ferry Road.  Click here for Detour Map

Expect delays while crews are working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Residential driveways will be accessible during the work.   

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION- I-285 @ 400 Information Open Houses

Location and Design Public Information Open Houses (PIOHs) will be held in August to discuss the I-285 at 400 road project.  Dates and times for the open houses are as follows:
 
  • August 19 -  11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • August 21 - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
  • August 21 -  5 p.m. to 7 p.m
All meetings will be held at Dunwoody Baptist Church at 1445 Mt. Vernon Road in Dunwoody.  For more information on PIOHs, visit  www.dot.ga.gov
   
FIREARMS SAFETY CLASSES

The Sandy Springs Police Department sponsors monthly safety classes. The next Firearms Safety Class is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13. The three-hour class is from 6-9 p.m. and is held at the Sandy Springs Police Department. COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE CENTER:  
School Supplies Still Needed  
School Bus
School is just around the corner and very soon, the Community Assistance Center will be giving local  children in need back packs with school supplies. CAC expects close to 1,000 local children to enroll in the program.  Please help prepare students for school with the tools they need by donating new backpacks and school supplies to CAC! Please bring new supplies and large, heavy-duty backpacks to CAC or make a donation online. For more information and a complete list of needed supplies visit www.ourcac.org. 
 
MOVIES BY MOONLIGHT IS BACK! 
 

Now in its 10th year, Movies By Moonlight returns bringing back the nostalgia and fun of the outdoor cinema! Imagine a drive-in movie and a block party all rolled into one (free!) family event! Leadership Sandy Springs provides quality family movies, projected on a huge, inflatable screen along with family entertainment, food and our community spirit! Sunday August 10 - The Highballs

Heritage GreenShows are from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and are FREE to the public.

 

Rhythm and Brews  

The open-air concerts are held through August on the last Thursday of each month at The Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn.Thursday, August 28 - Atlanta-based, The Packway Handle Band.  

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with the concert 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.  Admission is $5 for ages 21 and up, $2 for ages 13-20, free for ages 12 and under.  

Blankets, picnics and coolers are welcomed.  Pets and smoking are not allowed.  Parking is available on Sandy Springs Place in designated parking lots.  

Blue and Gray Saturdays - Civil War Family Days
HSS commemorates the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War with museum exhibits, lecture series and hands-on family programming on the last Saturday of the month, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
August 30 - Federal Soldiers Take the Field
