IVY COVERED CHARM OR
IVY COVERED HARM?

Once a popular garden plant, English Ivy (Hedera helix) is an exotic invasive plant. Ivy is a useful and attractive groundcover when managed appropriately, but once it starts to climb trees it can cause rotting, splitting and potentially kill the tree. Since property owners are responsible for the health and maintenance of their trees, here's a couple of things we'd like you to know:

  • Protect a tree by cutting the Ivy at the base of the tree and removing a collar of about 36" width around the base of the trunk. Maintain the open collar to prevent its return.
  • Do not try to remove the ivy from the tree trunk which can damage the bark - when left in place it will die back and shed naturally.
  • Use a glyphosate-based herbicide to control re-growth.
  • Carefully dispose of the debris to prevent re-sprouting.Do not toss ivy onto the ground in the woods, on your compost pile, or in your garden as it may continue to grow and spread!
  • Wear protective gear,
