JAZZ MENTORS IS MAY 23!
 
 
Join us at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 23 at Local 802 for JAZZ MENTORS, our exclusive series that connects up-and-coming musicians with some of New York City's premier artists, to discuss the business of jazz! Tickets are free, but you must RSVP now! 
   
Local 802, in partnership with the Council for Living Music, is hosting JAZZ MENTORS III, the third installment of Local 802's JAZZ MENTORS, a series of interactive panel discussions designed to connect up-and-coming musicians with some of New York City's premier jazz artists to discuss the business components of developing a career in music. Legendary bassist Ron Carter will join Maria Schneider, one of the today's most influential composers and industry advocates, and two of the world's premier jazz pianists, Renee Rosnes and Bill Charlap, to together guide young and emerging musicians through an open panel discussion about "Organizing Your Career: Getting Started in the Business of Jazz." Participants will have the unique opportunity to explore mastering the intricacies of the business and career management aspects of professional life in the music industry directly with some of the most famous and influential artists of the era.

WHO: The New York Jazzharmonic will preview a performance of a major new work, "After Coltrane," penned by Rufus Reid, Courtney Bryan, Jeremy Howard Beck and Bernard Hoffer, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's seminal work, "A Love Supreme." Ron Wasserman (artistic director) and Miho Hazama (associate director) lead the New York Jazzharmonic, a 17-piece big band that presents original jazz and concert pieces heavily influenced by classical and world music. Musicians are covered under a Local 802 contract.

WHEN: Thursday, May 12 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Local 802.

WHY: Fundraiser for the Local 802 Musicians' Emergency Relief Fund.

CONGRATS TO TONY NOMINEES! 
The Tony nominations are in! Congrats to the fantastic Local 802 musicians whose artistry makes so many Broadway shows a hit. We'd like to give a special shout-out to "Hamilton," whose 16 nominations are the most in Broadway history. The awards will be given out on June 12. Here's a list of some of the musical categories we're watching:

DO YOU USE LS-1 CONTRACTS?  
ALL LS-1 CONTRACTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY JULY 15, 2016 for the benefit period that begins September 1, 2016.
 
IMPORTANT: There is NO MORE BUY UP from this point forward.
 
Only teaching (private and institutional) and/or solo, live engagements performed between January 1 to June 30, 2016 can be reported on the LS-1 (i.e. no theater or electronic media work). Please call to discuss any other exceptions.

* If there are multiple employers and/or students, a separate LS-1 contract must be submitted for each one.
* Health contributions CANNOT EXCEED 15 percent of the gross wages.
* Work dues must be included at the time of submission.
* You must be a member in good standing (i.e. all past due work dues and membership dues must be up to date).
* Proof of engagement must be included -- copies of contracts, invoices, pay stubs/vouchers, spreadsheets of private students, etc.
* No benefits will be processed unless all these criteria are met.

CAREERS IN THE HEALING ARTS FOR MUSICIANS 
Musicians have unique abilities in listening, empathy and creativity that make them well suited for careers in the healing arts, including music therapy, massage therapy, personal training, social work, psychotherapy and speech therapy.

Hear from musicians and other artists who have pursued education and training to develop sideline and second careers in the healing arts.

TIME TO BUY A NEW INSTRUMENT?
SAVE THE DATE! The Actors Federal Credit Union announces a special Loan Day on Wednesday, June 1 for musicians at Local 802.

The Actors Federal Credit Union -- which is open to all Local 802 musicians -- has lowered its rates on musical instrument loans and is inviting members of Local 802 to its Loan Day on Wednesday, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Local 802. Rates for musical instrument loans range from 4.50 percent to 4.99 percent, up to a maximum amount of $250,000. Complete details are available here.
 
Members interested in financing with ActorsFCU must bring current government issued photo ID, proof of current income, and the top two pages of last year's tax return. Questions are welcome at (212) 869-8926. Press option 4.

MARY WHITAKER CASE -- SENTENCING UPDATE
As many know, Local 802 member Mary Whitaker was murdered on Aug. 20, 2014 at her home in Chautauqua, New York. She was only 61 when she was killed and she had been a member since 1976.

Both defendants have pled guilty. The sentencing dates are currently as follows:

FEDERAL SENTENCING 
Jonathan Conklin (May 19 at 10 a.m.) and Charles Sanford (May 19 at 11 a.m.). Location: U.S. Courthouse, 2 Niagara Square, Buffalo

STATE SENTENCING
Jonathan Conklin (May 18 at 1 p.m.) and Charles Sanford (May 20 at 9:30 a.m.). Location: Chautauqua County Courthouse, 1 North Erie Street, Mayville, NY 14757
 
As before, this information could change, but these current sentencing dates have now remained in place since mid-March.  Updates are posted here
