Local 802, in partnership with the Council for Living Music, today announced the launch of Jazz Mentors, a new forum for up-and-coming musicians to learn about the business of jazz some of the most successful artists in New York City. The Jazz Mentors forum, "Organizing Your Career: Getting Started in the Business of Jazz," will be led by bassist Bob Cranshaw, clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, and vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who will speak about their working lives as musicians and offer ideas to jump-start and sustain a career. These pre-eminent jazz leaders will guide participants through a discussion of some of the most vital aspects of launching a career, including: representation, touring, protecting your recordings in digital formats, the impact of streaming services and building a secure financial future. Located at Local 802, the informal setting will allow for a free flowing exchange between the audience and the renowned artists, encouraging full audience participation and interaction.

"It is vital that we ensure that emerging artists across the city have the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the promise of their enormous creativity and artistic passion," said Local 802 President Tino Gagliardi. "By providing the public with access to real-world advice and mentorship from some of our most successful colleagues, Local 802 is helping support the artistic and financial health of the entire arts community."

"The music industry is always changing and innovating, and today, with streaming services like Apple Music and Tidal changing how people get their music, that is especially the case," said Christian McBride, GRAMMY winning bassist and Local 802 member. "As musicians, we have to stay ahead of the curve in terms of information, particularly in matters of business so that we can make the most informed decisions possible regarding our careers."

MARY WHITAKER CASE
GOES TO COURT

Mary Whitaker
As many know, Local 802 member Mary Whitaker was murdered on Aug. 20, 2014 at her home in Chautauqua, New York. She was only 61 when she was killed and she had been a member since 1976.

Both murderers have pled guilty, and you may attend the sentencings.

As of now, the sentencing date for both defendants in federal court is Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. (Conklin) and 3 p.m. (Sanford). The federal courthouse is located at 2 Niagara Square, Buffalo, NY 14202. You will need to bring a photo ID to enter the building. Please allow time to go through security at the courthouse. SPECIAL NOTE: The day before the trial, you are advised to send an e-mail to Connie Lorber* to confirm that that the date and times have not changed, which sometimes occurs. (*Connie Lorber is a violist in the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and is volunteering to help with this question.)

The sentencing in state court is currently scheduled to take place the next day, Thursday, March 10, starting at 1:30 p.m. with the first defendant. After the first defendant is sentenced, there will time in between as the second defendant is transferred to the courthouse from the jail across the street. The Chautauqua County Courthouse is located at 1 North Erie Street, Mayville, NY 14757.
HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME STAGE FRIGHT?
Local 802's Allegro magazine would like to do a story about overcoming stage fright. We'd like to hear from musicians who have suffered and overcome stage fright, including the use of therapy, meditation, mindfulness, other techniques -- and even medications like beta-blockers and tranquilizers. The point of the story would be to help other musicians overcome stage fright by sharing success stories. If you're interested in learning more, e-mail Allegro editor Mikael Elsila by clicking here.
NEXT LOCAL 802 MEMBERSHIP MEETING: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15 at 5 P.M. AT LOCAL 802
