STOP SENDING MUSIC JOBS OVERSEAS!

The AFM has recently announced a new campaign called LISTEN UP! The campaign calls out the motion picture-TV film industry for treating U.S. musicians unfairly by offshoring movie soundtrack recordings. Many offshored soundtrack recordings are made for films funded in part by U.S. taxpayers. The Listen Up! campaign is saying that it is unacceptable for profitable companies to deprive musicians and their communities of good paying jobs."I am proud to say that music is my work," said Local 802 member and bassist Gail Kruvand, in the union's official press release. "But when companies undermine our livelihoods by sending our jobs overseas, it jeopardizes the future for all working musicians, it hurts our families, and it hurts our communities."

AFM President Ray Hair said, "People who love the movies know that music is the heart and soul of a film. They also know that musicians are vital to the motion picture and TV film industry. Our work must be afforded the same dignity and respect that other cast and crew members enjoy. We will engage industry leaders on these issues until there is positive change for musicians."

IS YOUR BOW CONTRABAND?

THIS IS AN URGENT CALL TO ACTION FROM THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS!

We need your help with an issue of great importance that may have far reaching negative implications for every member of our union who owns and travels abroad with musical instruments in particular containing African elephant ivory and other protected species.

On Feb. 25, 2014, the federal government issued sweeping new restrictions that prohibit the import or export of African elephant ivory into or out of the United States.

Any person traveling into or out of the United States with a musical instrument that contains ivory is subject to increased border scrutiny and enforcement.

The AFM is working with the federal government, members of Congress and other national partners to address this new threat to musicians' ability to travel unimpeded.

 FREE PILATES CLASSES FOR

MUSICIANS!

Announcing Pilates classes for musicians, offering techniques to build core strength and de-stress the body. Being physically fit is key to a long, pain-free performance career.  Local 802, plus the union's Membership Assistance Program and the Actors Fund, are pleased to present a free series of classes to help raise fitness levels and lessen the physical toll of stress on the body.

Whether you stand or sit to perform, your body takes a beating over time.  Do you experience a chronically sore back, "stuck" shoulders, a stiff neck, or maybe shooting pains running down a leg?  These are among the most common complaints of hard working musicians. These types of conditions tend to get worse, unless you do something. Join us to get a better body, week by week. You'll start feeling the benefits from the first class.

Certified Pilates instructor Karin Fantus has created this program to help musicians develop a more pain-free working relationship between body and instrument. Siena Shundi, social work coordinator at Local 802, will also participate. As a psychotherapist and athlete, Siena will add her unique perspective on the relationship of physical fitness to our overall well-being: mental, emotional and professional.

WHAT: A series of Pilates classes offering techniques to build core strength and de-stress the body

WHEN: Fridays from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There is a series currently in progress and another series coming up. Inquire about both.

Location (in Midtown Manhattan) to be announced once you register. (Registration is mandatory. Class limited to 10 participants. Class is free, but may fill up.)
