This Week It's All About the Gala!

This Friday, April 5th is the sixth annual Groundwork Gala, and we are celebrating in style at the Armory from 7-10pm with drinks, food, dancing and fundraising. There will be an art auction! There will be prizes! There will be music by the amazing band Hornography! And, we will be presenting the highly coveted Golden Trowel Award to our public and private partners in the Urban Agriculture Initiative: The City of Somerville and Mayor Curtatone, and Green City Growers' Jessie Banhazl.

This is our one major fundraising event of the year, so we are sending a plea to all our supporters that you will come out on Friday and celebrate with us. The best way to support Groundwork and have a great time doing it is to buy a ticket. We have $25 tickets, and special $50 VIP tickets that come with some free drinks and raffle tickets!

The sun has been shining, the temperature's been rising, so get some Spring in your step and kick off the growing season with us this Friday, April 5th at the 2013 Groundwork Gala. See you then!

Visualize World Peas

Groundwork's Green Team is hard at work planning the planting plans for the South STreet Farm and the Schoolyard Gardens, but even with these devoted young farmers and the big strides made in the past year with Urban Ag, we can't quite grow enough food for all 80,000 Somerville residents.

We've recently made the acquaintance of an organization that can help, though! If you find you can't make it out to Union or Davis, or any of the Mobile Farmers Market sites reliably, maybe consider the World PEAS CSA from the

The mission of the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project is to increase the vitality and sustainability of our local, regional, and national food system. They support beginning farmers from diverse backgrounds as they start and operate agricultural enterprises, thus building economic self-reliance and food security among participants and within their communities.   The World PEAS CSA was established to serve as a marketing outlet for farmers who faced many barriers to accessing direct sale markets (limited English language capacity, limited computer literacy, lack of adequate transportation, etc.). We like the sound of this CSA at Groundwork because of its alignment with our mission and its efforts to address health and racial equity, as well as food access. They offer pickups in Somerville and some of the surrounding towns, so check out their site for more information, or contact Kate Petcosky by phone (978-654-6745) or email [email protected].

Two Quick To Do's

1) If you haven't already, please take 5 minutes to fill out our online survey about Draw 7 Park, which will help us create recommendations to the DCR about the upcoming redevelopment of this public land in Assembly Square.

2) Register to come out on Earth Day/Comcast Cares Day on April 27th
to help clean up some very cool sites around Somerville! This is part of the Mayor's Spring Cleanup, and will include a BBQ for all volunteers!
