Thanks to Denton and Karen Dodd from New Bern, NC, a meeting of Second Winds on Saturday, January 26th, was lively, fun, and interesting.  Denton, a former and always faithful member of Second Winds, was with us as our "guest speaker/performer" with his Irish whistles.  Karen, Denton's wife, who we always considered an "honorary" member of Second Winds, also attended and nearly upstaged her husband by displaying some of her really beautiful quilts, which she began making when she decided to end her writing career.

Denton talked about and demonstrated several different instruments: a recorder, a real "tin" whistle, and his Abell whistle (made by Chris Abell of Asheville, who gave a presentation for RAFA some time ago) given to Denton by Karen.

Among other tunes, Denton played Rights of Man, accompanied by Karen on spoons.  What a pair!  Denton plays in several groups in New Bern, one of which performs at the Tryon Palace on occasion.

A lovely couple, Karen and Denton delighted our group of ten with their vibrancy, humor, and talents!   Many, many thanks to them for making the trip from New Bern to be with us.

The next meeting of Second Winds will be held on Sunday, March 10th, with the theme of The Classical Period (Mozart, Haydn, and many other composers of the period 1770 to 1820 or thereabouts).

Get in touch with Mary Croghan if you have questions:  croghanm@gmail.com, 919-835-4378.

Note: Second Winds is a group of adult amateur flutists of all levels, who gather every other month to play together and separately for the purpose of overcoming performance anxiety.  We are a sympathetic and non-threatening group, and we welcome new players. Contact coordinator Mary Croghan (see above) with questions.
