Flute Cocktail: Chapel Hill Flute Choir
RAFA began sponsoring a new flute choir in the Chapel Hill area this semester.
Conducted by Alma Coefman, the Flute Cocktail choir will be playing a cocktail's variety of fun and colorful music, including pieces from South America. Currently a small group of 4 flutists spanning a wide range of ages, the ensemble is looking forward to expanding the choir over the next few years.
In addition to the current use of alto flute and piccolo, the ensemble plans to round out the group with other instruments such as bass flute, cello, and guitar.
They meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, 3:30 - 4:30 pm, at Alma's home. If interested in joining the Flute Cocktail choir or getting more information about the group, please contact Alma by email at rcabeza@nc.rr.com.

Founded in 1994 to provide high-quality music instruction to economically disadvantaged children, the CMS provides weekly music lessons to more than 120 students, with many more children on a waiting list. Woodwinds are taught by RAFA members Emily Orr and Kelly Roudabush, who is also conductor of Silver Pipes. Thanks to all of you who participated in this occasion by sharing your music and inspiring these young musicians!

Michelle Dunn's "Awakening" CD "Awakening," the debut non-classical CD by RAFA member Michelle Dunn, is a vibrant reflection of her passion for flute, ethnomusicology, and modern advanced audio technology. Her music incorporates the ancient sounds of wood and bamboo flutes with native percussion, as well as today's "classical" metal flute with hard core digital beats and synthesized audio effects.
"Some of my music is deeply emotional; you will certainly feel that. But I also create music that resembles the more popular radio tunes of today. Take the hip-hop and dub beats, for example. I want to see young flutists driving around in their cars with their windows down, blasting my CD. And when the people around them look over at them, I want those flutists to say, "Yeah, that's right. I'm a flute player!"
Michelle's talents personify the term "multi-faceted" and carry her far beyond the boundaries of typical flutist/performer/musician. She is founder and executor of her own recording, production, and publishing companies. True to her "indie artist" nature and "do-it-yourself" attitude, Michelle is self-produced and records almost exclusively on her "iZZatcho Music" label.
Putting her graphic design skills to work, as well as her sense of humor, Michelle has created a line of "iZZatcho flute stuff," which consists of posters, apparel, and accessories that feature her custom graphics of "living" flutes, piccolos, and flute choirs. These items and new recordings of her original compositions will be available for purchase in January 2013 via Michelle's new online store.
More of Michelle's bio, music, videos, concert dates, and online store links can be found at: http://MichelleDunn-BornToFlute.com

Nicolas Duchamp

Winter Flute Intensives
Wilmington, NC
Session 1: January 3-6
Session 2: January 10-13
Session 3: March 18-22
French flutist Nicolas Duchamp, currently spending time teaching and performing in the United States, is offering several flute sessions in Wilmington, NC this winter. Internationally recognized and respected as a teacher in the French tradition of the Paris Conservatoire and Philippe Gaubert, Mr. Duchamp served many years as principal flutist for the National Opera Comique in Paris and toured and played intensively in his native France and internationally in Europe and North America.
In 2009, the family of Philippe Gaubert formally commissioned Mr. Duchamp to celebrate Gaubert's contribution to the French art of flute playing in a worldwide revival. Subsequently, Duchamp created the concert tribute and documentary film, GAUBERT VIVANT! with pianist Barbara McKenzie with whom he toured in 2010-11. This historic concert tour included Carnegie Hall's Weil Recital Hall in New York and Spivey Hall in Atlanta, where he recorded an historic performance on the famous Gaubert flute Louis Lot N° 1986 for American Public Media's "Performance Today," heard by over five million listeners in the US and abroad.
Duchamp is the authentic representative of the French Flute School in the world today, following in the footsteps of the famed Georges Barrere and Marcel Moyse.
