Highland United Methodist Church
1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh
Flutists of all ages from North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia will flock to Highland United Methodist Church on November 4 to participate in RAFA's 28th annual Review and Contest. Each participant will perform two solos for written evaluation and an opportunity to receive cash awards. Teachers and adult participants have been contacted with the afternoon's schedule by Coordinator Mary Croghan.
Flutists and pianists must use original music. Please remember to bring an extra copy of the music for the judges -- with measures numbered. Contestants may provide the piano part or a photocopy for the judges; all photocopies will be kept by RAFA and recycled or destroyed afterward.
The Contest Winners' Recital will be held during the Flute Fair on Saturday, November 10 at Highland United Methodist Church. Winners will be assigned to one of two recitals: 11:30 am OR 3:15 pm. Parents and friends are welcome to attend the winners' recitals at no cost. Those who wish to attend other Flute Fair events or the exhibit hall will be asked to pay the $15 admission fee unless they are RAFA members.

FLUTE FAIR 2012 featuring PROJECT Trio
Greg Pattillo, flute * Eric Stephenson, cello * Peter Seymour, bass

Saturday, November 10
9:00 - 5:30
Highland United Methodist Church
1901 Ridge Rd, Raleigh
Free for RAFA members; $15 general admission
The day's activities include participatory sessions led by PROJECT Trio; exhibits of the latest flutes, music and accessories; RAFA Contest winners' recitals; and an electrifying concert by PROJECT Trio to conclude the day. Bring your flute, your enthusiasm, and a mind open to learning together! Don't miss it!
PROJECT Trio is taking chamber music to a whole new level. Flutist Greg Pattillo, cellist Eric Stephenson, and bassist Peter Seymour are pushing the boundaries of classical music with a high-octane mix of jazz, hip-hop, and rock. Acclaimed as "packed with musicianship, joy, and surprise" by Downbeat Magazine and hailed for their "wide appeal, subversive humor and first-rate playing" by the Wall Street Journal, the Trio performs over 70 concerts a year, playing to fans of all ages in venues around the world. They are an internet sensation with over 71 million views and 78,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel.
The Trio got its big break in 2006 when Greg Pattillo's Beatbox Flute video went viral on YouTube, receiving millions of views in its first week. Reaching out to audiences of all ages through the Internet, live performances, and recordings, PROJECT Trio has since become one of the world's most championed and exciting instrumental ensembles.
Dedicated to engaging today's younger audiences, PROJECT Trio has performed and led workshops for over 100,000 students on three continents, and they are instantly recognized by students of all ages as a result of their YouTube following and appearances on popular TV shows on Nickelodeon and MTV. Greg Pattillo recently demonstrated his beatbox style for Jay Leno and performed with the Tonight Show orchestra.
At the RAFA Flute Fair on November 10, PROJECT Trio will lead three 60-minute participatory classes, each one geared for a specific age/level. Based on PROJECT Trio's mantra "You can jam!", participants will be fully engaged, using their bodies and their flutes to explore the topic of "Rhythm and Improv." These classes will also provide an up-close encounter with these amazing artists, as they share about their lives and creative music-making process in the internet era, touring, and what it takes to be a professional musician.
Description of classes:
- Rhythm and Pulse - This is a fully interactive class for musicians and non-musicians alike. Instead of using our instruments, we use our bodies to experience music and movement throughout the full space of the classroom. Inspired by Dalcroze Eurythmics, this class explores personal pulse, cross rhythms, on and off beats, cosmic whole notes, ensemble rhythm machines, syncopations, canons and metronomes!
- Improvisation 101 - This is a fully interactive class, with everyone in attendance encouraged to bring their instruments and play throughout the class. We learn a fundamental approach to improvisation, through arrangements featuring long-tones/drones, harmony, melody, beatbox techniques and vamps.

Second Winds
Second Winds, RAFA's program for adult amateur flutists, held a meeting on Sunday, October 21st. The meeting had a Baroque theme, with music of that period used for group warm-up playing, discussion, and solos by several members. Second Winds will meet again on Sunday, December 16th, at 2:00 p.m. in the parlor at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Rd., Raleigh. Bring your flute and join us! Second Winds is a great place to conquer your performance anxiety.
Our theme for December is Christmas, so come prepared to play Christmas music with the whole group and, if you wish, to play a solo or duet with a Christmas theme. Music from O Holy Night to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is appropriate.
Anyone who wishes to come and is not yet on the Second Winds e-mail list, call or write to Mary Croghan, croghanm@gmail.com

Your Input is Needed!
Meredith College flutist Andrea McKerlie is preparing a thesis on the topic of flutists' injuries, how to recognize them, and (hopefully!) how to tame and reverse them. This is a very personal topic for Andrea, and she hopes to use her experience, as well as that of other flutists in the community, to create a resource that will help flutists in dealing with these issues. The current phase of Andrea's research involves polling flutists on what kinds of pain/discomfort they notice when they play, how much they play and practice, and any trends they have noticed.
Andrea has prepared three surveys to gather input from three different levels of players -- high school, college, and professional flutists. The survey should take about fifteen minutes to complete, and all responses will remain anonymous. Please click on the appropriate link below and complete the survey by November 20. Questions can be directed to Andrea at mckerlie@email.meredith.edu.
High Schoolers (who play flute for at least 2 hours a week): http://tolu.na/QaA5Ak
College Students (who don't necessarily major in flute, but play routinely each week): http://tolu.na/VVQA6E
Professional Flutists (this can include graduate school students): http://tolu.na/QlwyOR
