We hope you enjoy this edition of Community Giving eNews and we are pleased to offer a direct link to our expanded Fall/Winter Community Giving newsletter, with the printed version of the newsletter now also available in our offices at both Rouge Valley Centenary and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering.
We hope you will enjoy reading more about the activities supporting community health care in east Toronto and west Durham Region as we celebrate the many events and donations made through our generous community partners. Among the stories is a report on the GreenLightTM Lasers that are now in use at both hospitals, as a result of Foundation fundraising efforts. Head of the RVHS Urology Program, Dr. Jeff Spodek is the subject of the story, and he is also the subject of a CTV News Health Feature you can view online here.
We are proud of all of the support we receive from individuals, businesses and community groups, and we want to share how that support is helping us to provide the best patient experience at Rouge Valley Health System. So I encourage you to download the file or drop into our office to pick up a copy.
Sincerely,
Chad Hanna, President & CEO, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation

Celebrating two big milestones at Ajax and Pickering's hospital
Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is celebrating two historic landmarks in the history of Ajax and Pickering's hospital, with the 60th anniversary of the hospital being recognized this year, and this Friday a special event planned to mark the 50th anniversary of the building expansion that changed everything for the community hospital.
In 1964, the hospital officially completed and opened a four-storey brick building with 127 acute-care beds and 24 bassinets. It is this expansion to be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 21, with a tea and reception, featuring an address from Rouge Valley's Chairman, Joan Wideman. Many retired nurses and health care staff expected to return to mingle and share their hospital memories, having worked at the hospital over the past 50 years.
It all takes place Friday, November 21, at 2 p.m. at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, Cafeteria, at 580 Harwood Ave. S., Ajax.

Muslim Welfare Centre brings support
On Saturday, November 15, a partnership between the Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto and Rouge Valley Health System Foundation formed with the announcement of a very generous $50,000 gift for the hospital's Cardiac Care Program.
This is the first ever gift of its kind to a local community hospital by this group. Foundation representatives met with Muhammad Ali, a Director on the MWC Board, last year and he shared his cardiac story with us. He learned first hand as a patient what the direct impact of community donations mean to patients who have undergone a cardiac event.

Below the moustache: Early detection of prostate cancer can save lives
Men's health is the focus in November, thanks to the international prostate awareness movement that has affectionately renamed the month Movember. My fellow Rouge Valley Health System urologists and I would like to remind everyone that while it's fun to change up their look with a bit of facial hair, it's more important to focus on what is way, way below the moustache.
Prostate cancer is insidious because there are usually few symptoms in the early stages. That's because the prostate is situated deep within the pelvis so it can get bigger before any symptoms become evident.
