This past Saturday we marked the official 'first day of summer'. So I think it's appropriate to take this opportunity to wish all of our Friends of the Foundation, you the donors, volunteers and supporters, a wonderful time in the next few months of what we hope will be warm and sunny weather.

Our senior volunteers and Foundation staff will not be idle though, with preparations ongoing to support the Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centre 3rd Annual Show and Shine on July 20, as well as the highly-anticipated return of Free Family Fun Day at the Races, at Ajax Downs, on August 17. We hope you will check out the details on these two summer events below and don't forget mark your calendar.

On behalf of everyone at the Foundation, our staff and Board of Directors, we wish all of you a safe and happy time of family this summer, at home or on your travels.

Sincerely,

Chad Hanna

The Bluffs homes
draw big crowds

People looking for spectacular home and garden ideas enjoyed the 2014 Gates Open Home and Garden Tour, held June 14.

Nine breath-taking properties situated along the Scarborough Bluffs in Toronto East were featured. The Bluffs area, which boasts some of Canada's most enviable real estate, attracted hundreds of participants to enjoy the tour. Community volunteers along with the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, organized the exclusive event in support of the surgical program at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital.

Ajax Legion on
board to help fund patient patio

Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital is in the midst of plans to create a wonderful new patient patio attached to the 2 North complex continuing care unit.

The Ajax Legion is behind the plan and they made a generous donation of $10,000 to the patio project at a recent Legion meeting. Last week some of the members, along with the Chair of the Poppy Fund, came to visit and check out the site of the patio and see first-hand how the funds will be used.

Pictured: Legion members Chester McConnell, Jim Devlin, Bob Outred, Ed Gallant, Mike Fitzpatrick and Steve Grainger, received a tour of the current patio from Dr. Romas Stas, Associate Chief of Staff for RVHS, and a Foundation Board member.

Lions make new
monitor possible
for little patients

Money raised from various Lions Club of Ajax initiatives ended up becoming a donation large enough so that a new vital signs monitor could be purchased for the Maternal and Newborn Program at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

These strong, ongoing supporters of the Foundation came to the hospital recently to see the machine and learn how and where it is used.

Pictured: Donna Brownlee, Manager of Paediatrics at RVAP, front row second from left, gave a group of Lions a tour and demonstration of how the vital signs monitor is used to help children cared for in the unit.

The annual volunteer recognition dinner was held on May 26 at the Qssis Banquet Hall in Scarborough. This was the second year recognizing both RVC volunteers and RVAP Auxiliary members at the annual event, and also included Rouge Valley's chaplains and youth volunteers.

Congratulations to the long-term recipients: Bev Carmichael of the RVAP Auxiliary, who received her 40-year pin; Exy Arnold, RVAP Auxiliary volunteer who received her 30-year pin; and RVC volunteer Valerie Sockett who was a 25-year recipient. Also a warm congratulations to all of the 5, 10, 15, and 20 year recipients, including the youth, who received their hour service pins, ranging from 100 to 600 hours.

Thank you to our dedicated volunteers and to those companies and individuals who donated gifts and prizes for the event!

Heart patients from Scarborough and Durham are getting more life-saving treatment thanks to the completion of major expansions at Rouge Valley Health System.
Dr. Joe Ricci

"Our program has grown significantly, but we didn't have the capacity to match our growing number of patients. With our new cardiac short stay unit we're able to see more patients in our fast-track emergency cardiac care - or Code STEMI," explains Dr. Joe Ricci, medical director of Rouge Valley's regional cardiac care program and Foundation Board member.

The hospital's cardiac short stay unit, at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campus in Scarborough, has been expanded to include 21 beds and 10 recliners allowing more patients to be cared for in this space.
