Next week one of the most exciting events of the year will be at the starting line when the Bed Race returns to Scarborough Town Centre, on Friday, May 23.

If you haven't seen the races and you don't know about Rouge Valley's Bed Race, let me tell you what a great time we have raising funds for hospital equipment, like we will be for a new operating table this year. The costumes, the friendly rivalries and the effort the runners put into every heat, to get the bed across the finish line, bring an amazing level of excitement to this fundraiser.

Check out the video at left to see for yourself and I encourage you to be a part of the action. Support a team with a donation to help them win the fundraising team trophy and make plans to come out and cheer them on. Your friends might see you on CTV on the News at Noon too!

I'll have my running shoes laced up when I see you on Friday!

Sincerely,

Chad Hanna

M*A*S*H Bash
a big hit!

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital and the 20th anniversary of the opening of the hospital's west tower when the first event was held, the second version of M*A*S*H Bash returned on May 10 to the Ajax Community Centre.

The community came together for a great party with close to 400 people enjoying great live music and a deejay, along with a meal and contests for best M*A*S*H costumes and trivia. Thanks to everyone who attended and all of the volunteers and sponsors that made the night a tremendous success!

Drinks all around!

Jack Astor's at Scarborough Town Centre was the place to be on Tuesday May 6 for their annual flair bartending competition, all the while raising funds for Rouge Valley Centenary hospital's Surgical Program.

Emceed by Devo Brown from KISS 92.5, teams showed off their bottle tosses and glass spins in front of an energetic crowd. Among the judges was Rouge Valley's own Dr. Jason C. Smith, Chief of Orthopaedics at RVC.
See pictures from the event here.

The same competition was held at the Pickering Jack Astor's the following night, May 7, with the local hotspot using the occasion to raise funds for the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital paediatric unit.

Rouge Valley's own Donna Brownlee, a manager in the paeds unit at Ajax and Pickering hospital, helped judge the winners at the Pickering event. See pictures here.

A day of smiles
for McHappy Day

McHappy Day at several McDonald's restaurants in Scarborough, owned by Terri Toms and Dale Bartlett, were extra special to Rouge Valley Centenary hospital, on May 7.

Funds from this year's big event, at these locations, are supporting the addition of two Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital!

Argos have good cheer for bed race

When the Bed Races hit the ground running next Friday, May 23, the crowd will have professional cheerleaders to show them how to get the participants to try their hardest!

Two members of the Argos Cheerleaders will be on hand to lead the cheers and pose for pictures with Bed Race fans, so make sure you come out to be part of the action!

Plan to be there on May 23 at the Scarborough Town Centre to cheer on the teams and really show your support by donating to one of the teams in the race, to help bring a new operating table to Rouge Valley Centenary hospital's surgical department.

Beds are tuned up and ready to roll!

More big news for Bed Race fans this week as East-Court Ford Lincoln, the official Pit Crew for the races once again, unveiled the new and improved beds!

The team at the popular car dealership has been working hard to get the beds looking better than ever and mechanically sound for the races. Thanks to everyone there that worked so hard and looking forward to more surprises yet from this creative crew.

A new prehabilitation program at Rouge Valley Health System is improving outcomes for shoulder surgery patients by strengthening them before their procedures.

The shoulder prehabilitation program, or "prehab" as it is nicknamed, is a one-hour education session for patients preparing to have shoulder surgery at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus. It was introduced this year for the patients of Rouge Valley shoulder specialists Dr. Stephen Gallay and Dr. Joel Lobo. The class, led by a nurse and physiotherapist, teaches patients what to expect before, during, and after their shoulder surgery. Various topics are covered during the education sessions including: how to properly apply a shoulder sling; which exercises they can do immediately after shoulder surgery; and how to do each exercise.
