With Christmas only a few days away, everyone here at the Foundation is looking forward to time with family and friends next week. But that doesn't mean it hasn't been a busy time for us, as you'll see with the many news items in this edition of Community Giving.

We have enjoyed a tremendous 2013 helping our great nurses and doctors provide great care close to home and we want to extend our best wishes for a very Merry Christmas to the many donors who celebrate the holiday as well as a Happy New Year to all.

Sincerely,

Chad Hanna

New Soul delivers
big cheque at Kia

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation was invited to the unveiling of the newest Kia Soul on December 5 at Bessada Kia in Pickering.

The folks at Bessada Kia chose to use this great occasion as an opportunity to present a $5,000 donation to the Foundation, to support the best patient experience at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

Pictured: Tracy, at left, with Maureen, at right, received the donation on behalf of the Foundation, from Misty, Joe and Marcelle, of Bessada Kia.

Durham Tamil Association supports Foundation with $5,000 gift

The Durham Tamil Association recently presented a cheque for $5,150 to Mary Slavik, of the RVHS Foundation, with the help of Ajax Mayor Steve Parish. The funds supported the Durham LifeBeat bandathon and  were donated in memory of Dan Ganesan.

The Foundation is grateful for the tremendous support and the funds will go toward purchasing a new operating table used in many surgeries, including cancer procedures, at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

Equipment donations helping patients
get around

In recent months, the Foundation has been contacted by grateful patients and their families wishing to support patients at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital, with equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches.

As a result, these items have been distributed to staff to provide to patients in Centenary's Chemotherapy and Oncology Clinic and the Emergency Department. The Foundation thanks the Panchal family, in memory of Lina (Lily) Panchal, the Giannou family in memory of Ted Giannou, the Arjmand family, and the Collins family in memory of John and Mary Collins, for helping to make the patient experience the best it can be at Rouge Valley Health System.

Beautiful quilts
are presents
for patients

The Twisted Stitchers Quilt Guild in Ajax delivered handmade quilts for patients at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital this week.

Kathy and Sue brought in the results of some of the group's latest efforts, six beautiful quilts to be given to recovering patients at RVAP. On behalf of the staff and Auxiliary who distribute the quilts to patients, thank you ladies for this generous gift.

Thank you for your kind messages!

Through the Gift of Health campaign, the Foundation is posting messages from our donors on Christmas tree poster boards located at both Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering and Rouge Valley Centenary.

We have received so many kind Christmas messages directed to our staff and patients and we are so grateful for the wonderful supporters who send these with their donations. Here are a few more messages that can be seen on the display:

"Seasons Greetings to patients and staff with best wishes for a healthy and peaceful New Year, from Myrna and David."

"Happy holidays to those who are not able to be home during this time due to work or health! P. Populkas."

"I'm sure you will be as well cared for at Centenary as I was 10 years ago (angioplasty). Merry Christmas, John S."
A new home for old video games

The National Post's Financial Post Tech Desk editor, Matt Hartley, is collecting new and used video games for children's hospitals and Hartley's Video Game Drive pediatric centres across Canada, in his annual Hartley's Video Game drive for Kids. Last year he collected more than 1,100 games and consoles, which were donated to child's life departments from coast to coast, including to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital and Rouge Valley Centenary hospital. Your gift of securities can achieve significant tax savings

The Canadian and Global equity markets have done very well in 2013. Within the past 12 months shares in Magna have appreciated 79%, CP Rail 58%, and West Jet 45%. Consider making a gift of securities - donate a specific number of shares that equals the gain in your portfolio over the past year. Donate securities directly to the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation and receive a charitable tax receipt that could help you achieve significant tax savings.

Already this month, Frank Gehring made his annual donation of 10 bank shares, John Walker donated $10,000 worth of securities to benefit cardiac care, and Dr. Joseph  Ricci donated $15,000 worth of securities to the Foundation.  Whether you donate a specific number of shares, or a specific value of shares, every donation benefits patient care at Rouge Valley Health System.
