Today, November 15, is recognized as National Philanthropy DayŽ across North America. It's a day when charities and not-for-profit organizations have an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the people who choose to give selflessly for the sole purpose of making the world a little better place through an act of kindness.

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is fortunate to be supported by so many caring people in our community and no words could adequately sum up our appreciation to each and every one of you.

To learn more about this movement to celebrate volunteerism and the importance of giving, follow this link to the official website.

Thank you again for your generous and ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Chad Hanna

Santa Claus Parades are fun
day and night

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation was well represented at the Pickering and Ajax Santa Claus Parades on November 9.

We appreciate the many volunteers who dressed up in hospital scrubs and festive hats to walk with our float, which was generously made possible by a private donor who loves the holiday spirit!

The Pickering parade was held in the morning and the Ajax parade the same evening, with each float lit up to delight all of the friendly people who cheered us on as we walked the route.

Pictured: At top, several teen volunteers wore hospital scrubs, smiles and Santa hats as they handed out holiday temporary tattoos at the Ajax parade. Below, a number of RVHS staff were also part of the parades, walking and waving to the large crowds that came out.

Bro Initiative wraps up with Halloween bash and celebrity bartender events

Bro-tober is over, and with it ends The Bro Initiative a campaign to bring new surgical power tools to Rouge Valley Health System's operating rooms. And thanks to great parties at three local restaurants, along with a successful online fundraising moustache challenge, the campaign surpassed $20,000!

On October 24, there was an exciting night of bartending competitions and celebrities at Jack Astor's in Scarborough, and the surgical program got Jack'd up for a great event. The same night in Ajax, Rouge Valley surgeons and their supporters took over Magwyers Pub for a great party.

The campaign finale came on October 31, with a packed house at Jack Astor's in Pickering with people lined up at the door to get into the Halloween Bash.

Pictured: Top photo, Drs. Mark Porte, Joel Lobo and Scott Donoghue poured pints at Magwyers. Second photo, Dr. Michael Chang, Annette Peddle, RN, and Dr. Jon Hummel, were the stars of the Flair Competition at Jack Astor's Scarborough.

Mayor's Gala explores amazing China

The annual Mayor's Gala in Pickering will be a celebration of China at the Pickering Rec Complex on November 23. But if you don't have tickets, they will be hard to come by now as the event has been sold out well in advance once again.

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is the recipient of a majority of the funds to support Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering hospital. Mayor Dave Ryan recently welcomed sponsors and the recipient charities at a reception at Port Restaurant in Pickering to show his appreciation for their support.

Bid on tickets to meet and then see the Barenaked Ladies in a private box!

This year's premier live auction item up for bid at the Mayor's Gala is a chance to sing along with Canadian music icons and seven-time Juno award winners, Barenaked Ladies. Eight tickets in a private box at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, on February 3, 2014, are being auctioned off and you can place a bid in advance if you aren't coming to the Gala.

But wait, there's more! Arrangements have also been made for a backstage meet and greet with the band before the concert. By night's end, you will feel like a million dollars.

Thank you to Regional Chair Roger Anderson and The Region of Durham.

All monies raised from this year's event will be used to purchase a fetal monitor for Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering hospital, as well as supporting mental health wellness of youth through the Kinark Foundation and much-needed mentorship for children with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ajax-Pickering. A contribution will also be made to a Typhoon Haiyan crisis relief fund and matched by our federal government.

Food and beverages are not included in the ticket price. Call Danielle at 905-683-2320 ext. 1501 to place a bid.
