Greetings!

With the arrival of October next week, the Foundation is excited to launch a fun new campaign we call The Bro Initiative.

You will read more about the campaign later in this edition of Community Giving, but I want to encourage everyone to visit www.broinitiative.ca to find out about the need for new surgical power tools in Rouge Valley's operating rooms.

Along with a number of events, I am particularly looking forward to seeing the results of our very own moustache event throughout the month, what we are calling Brotober. Myself and many other Bros supporting the campaign, are growing moustaches and fundraising online as part of the campaign and I hope I can count on your support to make a donation or join The Bro Initiative yourself to fundraise online.

With your support, we can help the amazing surgeons of Rouge Valley by providing them with the tools they need to continue providing the best care possible to your friends, family and neighbours.

Best regards,

Chad Hanna

The Bro Initiative turning October into Brovember for surgical power tools

In October, men who care about their community hospital will be sporting a 'manly' moustache, goatee or beard, celebrating the facial hair they have, or even fundraising to stay clean shaven, all in support of Rouge Valley Health System's surgical program.

The Bro Initiative campaign is raising funds for new power tools used in a variety of surgical procedures. These are actual medical power tools - not unlike the cordless drill on the workbench in your garage - but designed for surgical attachments used in the operating room.

A number of events will be held through Brotober, from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, to support the campaign, including celebrity bartender nights. The community is invited to get involved and sponsors are still welcome to join the cause, by contacting Dave Stell at [email protected].

Another classic
Mayors' Golf tournament

The Men's Health program at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital was the beneficiary of the successful 2013 Mayors' Charity Golf Classic, with $115,000 raised this year toward purchasing a Green Light Laser for the community hospital.

Sokolowski award
goes to Don Terry

The Mayor's Charity Golf Classic is also an opportunity for the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation to announce the recipient of the Howard Sokolowski Award, presented to an individual who has shown great dedication to health care in the community.

A closely-guarded secret until the announcement, this year's recipient was revealed to be Don Terry, who has been involved for a number of years as a leader in numerous fundraising activities supporting the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, dating back to the 1990s.

Off to the races!

The popular Free Family Fun Day at the Races returned for another great day of kids' activities and fun at Ajax Downs on Sunday, Aug. 18, with an estimated 1,000 kids and thousands of parents on hand to enjoy the beautiful day.

This year two special guests, Caillou and Strawberry Shortcake helped make the day unforgettable for young fans, along with actor Kevin Duhaney,  the Blue Dino Ranger, Ethan, on Power Rangers
.

Community invited to join telephone town halls on a possible merger

Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) and The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) invite the community to join interactive telephone town halls that will explore the benefits and risks of a possible merger and ask for community input. Community members can sign up for the telephone town hall by leaving their name and phone number.

Those who register will receive a phone call that will connect them to a telephone town hall conversation. This phone technology can accommodate thousands of participants. In order to join the call, you must pre-register in advance. The first telephone town halls took place Tuesday, Sept. 24 and the next is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8 at 7:05 p.m.

For the most current information and resources on the RVHS/TSH facilitated integration process, please visit www.leadingforpatients.ca.

RVHS in a HUFF over video contest
