Greetings!
This has been a very busy spring for the Foundation and we have been blessed by good weather and great support for our latest events. Once again our Bed Race and Who's Your Caddy? events brought together some fun-loving participants, most dressed in eye-catching costumes or sporting team themes as they took part in the races or golfing. Both events were great successes and we are grateful for the support of the participants, sponsors and volunteers.
And things aren't slowing down this month as we look forward to special events on the calendar. New events like the Gates Open home & garden tour, along with returning fundraising events like the National Team Realty tennis tournament make June another busy month for the Foundation. As always, thank you for your ongoing support and I hope you enjoy this edition of Community Giving.
Best regards, Chad Hanna, President & CEO, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation

The ladies know their Caddy!
The golf event of the year was a ladies-only affair on Thursday, May 30, 2013 when the Who's Your Caddy? ladies-only golf tournament returned to Whitevale Golf Club, in support of Rouge Valley Health System Foundation.
This fourth edition of the wildly popular tournament, as always, had each ladies' foursome paired with a male caddy. It was a great day of fun, with costumes, contests and even a little bit of golf. This year they raised more than $15,000 to help purchase equipment for the colposcopy (women's health) clinic in the ACU at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
Pictured: Radio personality Terry Johnston even went as far as being the tee for his Owasco foursome, Susan Verwey, Amy Verway, Yolanda Sabadin and Sue Butts.

Bandit joins the team at RVAP
Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital has its very own therapy dog program now, thanks to Therapeutic Paws of Canada (TPOC). And the program has recently expanded from one dog to two, with a third dog soon to join the ranks. Runkus, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and his handler Graham Horne of Ajax are now seen making weekly visits as of January. They have been joined by Henry and Katie Kortekaas of Pickering Village, and Bandit, a border collie who started making visits as of mid-May. Experts talk about legal matters in health care situations
On May 14 the lawyers from Singer Kwinter hosted 40 emergency department staff and physicians from both RVC and RVAP at the Safari Bar & Grill.
They presented topics such as documentation and the law; legal responsibilities in the event of patient death; and the importance of legal counsel after an injury. It was a very informative session and we thank Singer Kwinter for their donation to emergency nursing education, and their continued support of educational sessions like this.

Ask the Advisor:
The many benefits of life insurance
Ask the Advisor is a new section created for the Foundation's website to provide donors, or those considering planned gifts, a way to learn more about the process and all of the possibilities and proper steps to take to maximize the benefits of a donation to the charity and the donor.
This month financial advisor Kevin Murdock, a volunteer and member of the Planned Giving committee, explains the ins and outs of life insurance as a charitable gift. He talks about the benefits to you and your charity of choice, whether it's right for you and the different ways it can help you protect your estate.

Chronic disease patients living well thanks to new education clinics
Chronic disease patients are living well thanks to new education clinics These days, 71-year-old Whitby resident Jim Wilde is breathing a lot easier. For the past three years, the grandfather of eight has been living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a chronic disease that limits airflow to and from the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Thanks to a new COPD education clinic offered by Rouge Valley Health System, Jim is learning how to successfully manage his condition.
This clinic is part of Rouge Valley's new chronic disease education program, helping patients to achieve a better quality of life by learning how to effectively manage their chronic disease. Currently, the program includes the following five clinics: COPD, osteoporosis, arthritis, chronic pain and quitting smoking.
Read the rest of COPD patient Jim Wilde's story here. Visit www.rougevalley.ca/livingwell for more information about the clinics and how to register for classes.
