Greetings!
Next week a special event takes place with the return of the popular Walk with Heart walkathon, at the Rouge Valley Centenary hospital's 11th floor Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation Service.
People from Durham Region and east Toronto rely on this program, and each year this event gets bigger and better. The dedicated and upbeat staff always strive to make Walk with Heart a huge and fun success, with the help of a lot of cardiac rehab supporters, many of them people who are using or have needed the services of the program. Their goal this year is to raise $100,000 to purchase a metabolic exercise stress test system and an improved air circulation system for the track.
Since its start in 1997, this amazing cardiac program has helped more than 10,000 patients to take control of their heart health. So I hope you will support the effort of everyone involved in this event by signing up to collect pledges and taking part in the walk, or by making a safe and secure online donation to Walk with Heart here.
Best regards, Chad Hanna, President & CEORouge Valley Health System Foundation

Healing Hope Brunch had entertainment to please everyone
Letna Allen-Rowe, a cancer survivor, held the Healing Hope Fundraising Brunch on April 7 in Scarborough and a great crowd of supporters including local politicians came out to support the event. And the following week, Ms. Letna presented an amazing $5,500 cheque to the Rouge Valley Health System's Cancer Care Program, raised through the popular new event. Ms. Letna, a performer and singer herself, was very excited to bring together talented singers and a fashion show for the audience's pleasure. And Ms. Letna's surprise performance was a highlight of the day.Pictured: Top, Ms. Letna performs at the Healing Hope Brunch, April 7. Below, on April 20, Ms. Letna, centre with Dr. Tracey Asano, left, Dr. James Chiarotto and two of Ms. Letna's friends, presented the proceeds of the brunch, $5,500 to the Cancer Care Program. To read more about the event and see pictures, click here.

Volunteers support surgical team with biopsy machine
Rouge Valley Centenary hospital (RVC) Volunteer Services recently presented a donation of $85,000 to the Surgical and Oncology program at RVC, to purchase a new Sentinel Node Biopsy Machine.
The Surgical and Oncology teams have one machine currently, but were in dire need of a second for the last two years. The second machine allows for more procedures in a timely manner, instead of scheduling around availability. Multiple physicians can make use of it with a dedicated Operating Room where it will be located.
Pictured: Volunteer convenors, Foundation staff and surgeon Dr. Tracey Asano, far left, standing second row, celebrated the Volunteers $85,000 donation for a new Sentinel Node Biopsy Machine, on April 15. Read more about the donation at our blog, Foundation Chat. |
Bed Race prep work underway for May 24
The talented 'pit crew' from East-Court Ford Lincoln are busy under the hood of the Bed Race beds and building a pace car for this year's races on May 24. The staff at East-Court put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the race each year and we're looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us at the 2013 race, returning to Scarborough Town Centre. Be a part of the action! Start a bed race team today and register online or find out how you can be a sponsor for this popular event. Pictured: Top, in the back halls of Rouge Valley Centenary hospital's basement, the East-Court Ford Lincoln mechanics change out the wheels of the four race beds. Below, the pace bed is under construction and this is a sneak peek of what they have started. Look for the completed car to be unveiled at the May 24 races. |

Crafty ladies knit blankets for RVAP
The Wednesday Crafty Ladies of the South Pickering Seniors Club recently donated 30 new hand-made lap blankets to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, for the Auxiliary to distribute to patients.
About 18-20 ladies gather each Wednesday, and these beautiful blankets are the results of many hours of knitting.
On behalf of the Auxiliary, the Foundation would like to thank the volunteers at the South Pickering Seniors Club for their generous donation to patient comfort!

Rouge Valley gets an 'A' in national CBC rating
Rik Ganderton, President and CEO, RVHS, writes in a recent blog:
The CBC's the fifth estate issued its splash on its hospital survey yesterday. While we have questions about the survey's analytical validity, the old adage of "there is no such thing as bad publicity" comes to mind and in this case the publicity we are receiving is great!
The CBC's the fifth estate crunched its numbers from the Canadian Hospital Reporting Project by the Canadian Institute for Health Information. The result - both of our Rouge Valley hospital campuses got an "A" ranking!

Ask the Advisor: Planned gift advice from the experts
The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is proud to offer a new service to supporters of the Foundation through the expertise of the talented experts who volunteer on our Planned Giving Committee.
Ask the Advisor is a new section created on the Foundation's website to provide donors, or those considering planned gifts, a way to learn more about the process and all of the possibilities and proper steps to take to maximize a donation's value to the charity and the donor.
Currently, Domenic Tagliola explains what items are most critical when considering your will. He talks about the many factors to consider when putting together what is a critical document and explains the need to make a clear and concise plan.
For more information on Ask the Advisor or making a planned gift, contact Mary Slavik, Director, Planned Giving at 416-281-7462 or at mslavik@rougevalley.ca.
