Heart of it All
From Rouge with Love collage
Greetings!

To everyone who attended and supported From Rouge with Love on March 22, all of us at the RVHS Foundation would like to thank you for helping to make this our most exciting gala yet.

We are very proud that demand for tickets made the gala a sell out a week beforehand and in the days since we have heard from many of you about how much fun you had with our James Bond-style gala.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the organizing committee and volunteers for all of their hard work to make this event possible and to the sponsors and guests for supporting your hospital by taking part.

I hope you will take this opportunity to visit the gala website to find a link to our gallery of photos of the evening. It's easy to see why people enjoyed themselves so much.

 Best regards,

Chad Hanna

Mental Health Mr. Morrissey
patients receive
generous support

Jim Morrissey visited Rouge Valley Centenary hospital recently to deliver what has become an annual gift, on behalf of the Mental Health Council for Scarborough. The Mental Health Inpatient Recreation Therapy, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit is the beneficiary of this generous gift of $4,000.

The funds will be used to purchase craft supplies, horticultural supplies, CDs for karaoke, games for Wii and the Shoniker Clinic Outpatient Clinic will now have a new 50' TV, while the Margaret Birch Wing will have funds for a 3rd floor tranquility garden.

Local Shoppers Shoppers owners
Drug Mart owners
support women's health at RVAP

Shoppers Drug Mart owners, representing several of the Ajax and Pickering stores, dropped into Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital recently to present a cheque for more than $20,000 to support women's health for a morcellator tool for the surgical program.

The funds were raised through the stores' annual Tree of Life campaign and the local owners chose to support their community hospital with the funding. A morcellator is a surgical instrument used for division and removal of large masses of tissues during laparoscopic surgery.

Polar bears have polar bear swim
warm hearts

Eric Novak and peter Gos, two of the organizers of Ajax's Polar Bear Swim came by Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital recently to present a special gift.

The proceeds of their Jan. 1, 2013 swim in frigid Lake Ontario reached $2,100 this year and they once again dedicated the funds to the Heart of it All campaign. The two dedicated Polar Bears, along with their friend Bob Murray, have been holding the New Year's Day dip in Lake Ontario for a number of years and in recent years have chosen to use the occasion to support local charities.

Pictured: Eric Novak and Peter Gos got a look at one of the new echocardiograms and were given a demonstration by campaign co-chair Ram Vijayaraghavan and Wendy Nagy, a Charge Cardiology Technologist. Also on hand was Katherine Craine, representing the RVHS Foundation.

End of an era Ildi and Edith

The 4477 Shop was a successful and popular second-hand shop for many years in Pickering Village, operated by the Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. However, due to financial pressures of rent and overwhelming time demands on volunteers, the Auxiliary decided this year it was time to close the shop, so the doors closed for the final time last month.

Read more about the shop's history and the special bonds formed by the people who have worked there over the years in the pages of the Ajax News Advertiser.

Rouge Valley asks community
to 'Be A Donor'

Rouge Valley's Gift of 8 campaign will run throughout the month of April, leading into National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, April 21 - 28. The Gift of 8 refers to the fact that each organ donation has the potential to save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of as many as 75 others through tissue donation. Starting on Tuesday, April 2, RVHS will fly Trillium's Beadonor.ca flag throughout the month.

Staff, physicians, volunteers and the public can help RVHS surpass its target of 200 donors. All you have to do is register on one of Rouge Valley's two Trillium Gift of Life web pages:

· Rouge Valley Centenary (www.beadonor.ca/rougevalleycentenary); or
· Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (www.beadonor.ca/rougevalleyajaxandpickering).

Making a childs' Fun Center
hospital visit
a little easier

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Durham partnered with Starlight Children's Foundation Canada in a unique relationship recently, to help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families who rely on care at Rouge Valley Ajax Pickering hospital (RVAP).

The donation is another example of how OPG continues its commitment to improved health care in Durham Region. The Fun Centre for RVAP has found a home in the Emergency Department thanks to OPG's generous donation to Starlight Children's Foundation Canada. The Fun Centre is a mobile entertainment unit that features a flat-screen LCD TV, DVD player and Nintendo Wii gaming system with many popular games built into the memory for easy access.

Pictured: The Fun Center was put into use on March 27 in the Emergency Unit  at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital (RVAP), with Don Terry of OPG, Susan Remmer of Starlight and RVAP nurses Kelly Pasnick and Charlotte Beaton on hand to accept the gift.

Read more about the donation at our blog, Foundation Chat.
