Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign

Heart of it All
Greetings!

Last week was an exciting time for the Foundation, with the celebration of the arrival of the first beds and the completion of the Buy a Bed campaign at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital.

We were so proud to see the new beds put into use as soon as they were assembled last week and to have had the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the campaign. If you were one of the many who raised funds for new beds or volunteered at one of the many events, and couldn't be here on Feb. 6, I want to personally thank you for making the Buy a Bed campaign more successful than we ever expected.

To all of our supporters celebrating Chinese New Year, we wish you Kung Hei Fat Choi 2013! We hope that the year of the snake is happy and prosperous for you.

From Rouge With LoveAnd finally, don't forget about From Rouge with Love the Foundation's annual gala, on March 22 this year. If you haven't made plans to join us at Muzik Nightclub in Toronto for this tribute to 50 years of James Bond movies, you are risking missing the event of the year. I encourage you to order your tickets today.

 Best regards,

Chad Hanna

Bed campaign rolls to finish line
with big celebration for donors

The dedicated donors, volunteers and hospital staff who made the Buy a Bed campaign a huge success were celebrated for their Buy a Bed celebrationgreat contributions on Feb. 6 as the first batch of new beds rolled through the doors of Rouge Valley Centenary hospital (RVC).

The campaign was launched two years ago and featured bed races, an overnight bed-a-thon, McHappy Days, a big gift from our Volunteer Services and school McDonald's fundraiser nights, as well as many community groups holding events to help make the campaign a success.

Kung Hei Fat Choi 2013!

Yesterday, Feb. 10, was the beginning of the Chinese New Year, marking the Year of the Snake.

Sometimes called the Lunar New Year, the festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. Prior to New Year's Day, families decorate their living rooms with vases of pretty blossoms, platters of oranges and tangerines and a candy tray with eight varieties of dried sweet fruit.

From the Foundation, to everyone celebrating this special occasion, we wish you Kung Hei Fat Choi!

A special bequest

Recently, the  Heart of it All campaign received a special bequest from the Estates of Mrs. Ivey and Mr. Sam Nishida. Long-time supporters of the Foundation, they left this final gift in recognition of the wonderful care they received from the doctors and nurses at Rouge Valley.

Donations like this support patient care at Rouge Valley and make a difference in the lives of your friends and neighbours. If you would like to honour your care team in this easy and thoughtful way, contact Planned Giving Director Mary Slavik at [email protected].

Pennies are still valuable!

Now that the Canadian penny is being phased out, it's time to find a good use for all those pennies you have in jars at home. Our great volunteers at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital are collecting pennies to support all of their fundraising activities.

You are encouraged to bring your penny collections to either hospital and drop them off at the volunteer information booths. As of this week, the penny drive by the Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital is still climbing and has nearly reached $1,000!

All of Rouge Valley's volunteers are very appreciative of your support and hope you will continue to bring in your pennies!

Foundation staff on the Leading Edge

Rouge Valley Health System Foundation (RVHSF) is proud to have staff dedicated to continuous learning and building their skill sets to help the Foundation grow and succeed.

Tracy and Jennifer Jennifer R. Collins, Special Projects Officer for RVHSF, recently completed the Leading Edge Program, a joint effort of RVHS, Lakeridge Health and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Through the course participants learn about leadership, how decisions are made within the organization and how to foster positive relationships.

"We're proud to have talented staff working at the Foundation and by completing the Leading Edge Program, Jennifer has taken the next step in developing solid leadership skills and applying new knowledge to benefit our entire team," says Tracy Paterson, Vice-President of the RVHS Foundation.

New program improves patient recovery at RVAP

A new program introduced in Rouge Valley Health System's (RVHS) surgical program is helping hip and knee replacement patients to return home sooner, and in better physical condition.

The prehabilitation - or prehab - program, based at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, was introduced recently. By helping to bring patients to optimal physical condition before their surgeries, patients leave hospital sooner, and in better condition, after their surgeries. More patients are now able to return home in two to three days.
