Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign

Heart of it All
Greetings!

December is finally here and with it, of course, comes the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation's annual Gift of Health campaign.

Gift of HealthPersonally, it is truly humbling to see the overwhelming support we receive from our generous donors each holiday season. But along with that, it is always heart-warming to read some of the  personal messages that accompany the donations.

Inside many of the envelopes we find hand-written notes on the little gift-shaped paper we include in letters to our donors, with words of thanks and kind support for our staff and the patients they care for. We post these notes for everyone to read on seasonal displays in the lobbies of both Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital and Rouge Valley Centenary hospital.

We often see people stopping to read these notes, doctors, nurses, patients and their families.

So thank you for your wonderful support and for your kind messages everyone. They are very much appreciated by everyone here.

Best regards,

Chad Hanna

Now that's Amore! 2012 mayor's gala

The 2012 edition of the Pickering Mayor's Gala was a tremendous success, and love was in the air as guests celebrated That's Amore, an Italian theme at the transformed Pickering Rec Complex on Nov. 24.

The talented Mark Masri performed and it was a great night of fun for all of the guests, with a true Italian meal in many courses, along with the ambiance of the 'old country' displayed throughout the venue.

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is very proud to be one of the recipients of the funds raised at the Gala each year. Thank you to Mayor Ryan and his wife Anne for hosting such a beautiful evening.

Representatives from RBC were treated to a tour of the Shoniker Clinic's Child & Adolescent Mental Health Clinic recently, to see how their funding has led to many improvements to the unit in the past year.

Julie Kish, Manager, Child & Adolescent Mental Health and Crisis Program, showed the group of area managers and branch managers in the Scarborough area, the new furniture, modern decor and explained the many ways the funds have helped staff in the department to better care for their young patients.

Loose Endz!

Loose Endz The Salon hosted a Cutathon in support of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation this fall and it was a great success, raising $1,000 for their community hospital.

The official cheque presentation took place Nov. 24. The Foundation would like to express its great appreciation to this local business for supporting local health care and especially the patients of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

team up for
Buy a Bed

St. Malachy's school in Scarborough held another fundraiser at Port Union McDonald's on Nov. 26, with great success.

There are 200 students at the school and many of them, along with their families, took part with teachers and other faculty behind the counter serving to their students and parents. This is the second time they have held this fundraiser for Rouge Valley Centenary hospital's Buy a Bed campaign.

The location's owners, the Bartletts, were also all there - a wonderful show of support for the hospital, and so welcoming to the St. Malachy's community! The Bartlett family and their McDonald's restaurants have sponsored 7 beds for the campaign. Thank you again on behalf of the Foundation to the Bartletts and St. Malachy!

Let the Foundation help Christmas Cards
you write your cards
this holiday season

For that person on your Christmas list who has everything, we have a suggestion to help. This year, consider making a donation to the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, in their honour.

We'll send a card to each person you choose on your behalf! They are beautiful holiday cards that can honour a hospital staff member or a loved one. The cards can be personalized to include any message you would like to add. They are only five for $20 or 20 for $50

To find out more or to place a donation and arrange for the cards to be mailed, contact Laurie Breeze at lbreeze@rougevalley.ca. Or call Laurie at 416-281-7342

Gift of Health

Our annual holiday campaign, the Gift of Life, is well underway in West Durham and East Scarborough. Look for our advertisements in local newspapers like the Scarborough Mirror and Ajax and Pickering News Advertiser, as well as the Monsoon Journal and even on the back of a Durham Region Transit bus!

We are very grateful for the support of our donors, like you, and we hope when you consider charitable gifts this month, you will think of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation. Aside from financial gifts, keep in mind that your business or staff can host a toy drive, and we can help you share these gifts with children receiving care at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering or Rouge Valley Centenary during the holiday season.

And, as you see pictured, we welcome all of your holiday messages, which we are posting in the lobbies of both hospital sites, for staff and patients to read.

To find out more, call 905-683-2320 ext. 1501 or 416-281-7342 to tell us about your toy drive, or to make an online donation, click here.

Just warming up blanket donations

When we put out a call to the knitters of Ajax and Pickering, we didn't know exactly what response to expect. What happened was a very pleasant surprise!

Individual knitters and groups from both communities answered the call, big time! We have had a number of donations of lap blankets made already with more expected yet. The Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital is collecting and distributing the donations as they come in.

Thank you for all of the beautiful blankets received so far and we look forward to sharing them with the Auxiliary and then to the many patients in different departments at the hospital who are always happy to receive such a thoughtful and warm gift.

Pictured: Top photo, Susan Reed of St. Paul's United, delivered a big bag of blankets, received by RVHSF Event Coordinator, Danielle De Luca.
Second photo: Esther Grzywatz of Pickering brought in several blankets she made herself, received by RVHSF Vice President, Tracy Paterson.

Gift of securities come in many sizes

For the sixth year in a row, long-time donor Frank Gehring has donated 10 shares of Royal Bank of Canada stock to the Foundation.

"I purchased 200 shares and now donate 10 shares each year to Rouge Valley in support of patient care."  says Mr. Gehring.

The common misconception is that you have to to donate hundreds of shares to gain any tax benefit. Not true. If you're looking for tax relief from capital gains or simply wish to make a charitable contribution, a donation of a few shares can still pave the way to tax relief.  Talk to your professional advisor to determine if this strategy works for you and how many shares you can donate to meet your tax objectives.
