Heart of it All
Greetings!

It's unmistakable. The holiday season is upon us.

Many stores are already decorated and some are even playing seasonal music to set the mood. And here at the Rouge Valley Health System, you will see signs of the holidays springing up starting this week, with Christmas trees up and decorated in different units and a holiday display in the lobbies of both Rouge Valley Centenary hospital and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

We are very grateful to our volunteers for helping to create these displays and we encourage you to make a contribution as well. Each year we have space to post season's greeting and messages of appreciation to our staff, from patients, families and community supporters.

Please look for it the next time you visit. There's a good chance you will see one of the hospital's staff stopping to read the messages, which they greatly appreciate.

Best regards,

Chad Hanna

Decking the halls artists
with new artwork

In time for the holiday season, new paintings and a couple of photographs by local artists - including members of staff and Auxiliary volunteers - is being displayed in the corridors of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

These wonderful amateur artists know that their talent is having an impact on patients, visitors and staff. Plus, if an artist sells their work they make a donation to Rouge Valley Health System Foundation.

Special thanks to Alma Kelley who is spearheading this project. See all of the artwork on display by clicking here.

Makeovers make Shoppers Makeovers
a difference

Shoppers Drug Mart, in the Pickering Town Centre, held a makeover event, Nov. 3, and Derek Selby, of Cover FX, was there demonstrating the latest in makeup techniques and applications.

Along with complimentary makeovers, when guests purchased a makeup surprise bag, $5 went toward the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital Women's and Children's program. Along with a donation from the store itself, and Cover FX, the total donation for the event was an amazing $3,500!

Run the Lake cool run the lake 2012
fun for runners

On a cool but sunny Saturday, more than 100 runners came out to Rotary Park on the Ajax waterfront to take part in the 2012 Run the Lake, Nov. 3, organized by the Rotary Clubs of Ajax and Pickering.

This year, proceeds from the event will purchase Bili Lights for the Women's and Children's Program at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. A Bili Light is a phototherapy tool used to treat newborn jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia).

Loonies, toonies Loonie Toonie Walk
for volunteers

Rouge Valley Centenary Volunteer Services held a Loonie/Toonie Walk in the Front Lobby of the hospital on Nov. 15.  Generous staff and visitors donated loonies, toonies, quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies and even paper money!

All monies raised from the event will go toward much-needed hospital equipment. See more pictures here.

Santa pays an Pickering parade
early visit to
West Durham

The Santa Claus parades were held on Nov. 10 in Ajax and Pickering and once again, we were overwhelmed by the great volunteer support we received, with many people donning scrubs to walk the route representing the Foundation.

The Pickering parade was held in the morning and later that day the Ajax parade of lights hits the street in the evening. The Rouge Valley Health System was once again represented by a float created by the Foundation, thanks to financial and personal support of Board Director Dr. Romas Stas, Associate Chief of Staff for RVHS.

Award-winning workplace

For the second consecutive year, Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) has been recognized with a gold Quality Healthcare Workplace Award for its actions in creating a healthy workplace for its 3,500 staff, physicians and volunteers.

The Ontario Health Association (OHA) and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care - HealthForceOntario, sponsor the award, which is in its third year. RVHS was among 39 health care organizations across Ontario recognized for efforts to improve the workplace in ways that contribute to employees' quality of work life and the quality of the care and services delivered. The winners were honoured during last week's OHA's annual HealthAchieve conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Special tax incentive until Dec. 31

Since 2006 the government has provided incentives for people to make a gift to their favourite charity by donating securities. This type of donation, to an organization such as Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, can eliminate the capital gains tax payable, while providing you with a tax credit based on the current, full-market value of the gift.

In turn, your gift will help Rouge Valley purchase vital equipment that is essential to the treatment and care of thousands of patients at your community hospital. We hope you will take time to consider this type of gift when addressing your financial and tax planning for this year. Remember, you have until December 31st to make a gift of securities for this current tax year.
