 January 2014
Human trafficking or "modern-day slavery" affects nearly 2 million people worldwide each year.

January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Month and we want to start the year off by raising awareness about this important issue. In the United States any minor under 18 years of age involved in prostitution is considered trafficked. Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for commercial sex, labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of subjecting that person to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery. In the United States any minor under 18 years of age involved in prostitution is considered trafficked.

Also known as "Modern Day Slavery," human trafficking is a global industry estimated to make $32 billion annually. It is the fastest growing and second largest criminal activity in the world, tied with arms and after drug dealing. There is no one type of victim. Trafficking can happen to people of many different backgrounds, including men and women, boys and girls, people of all sexual orientations or gender identities, and people who are born in the United States, or in many countries around the world; all are vulnerable. Victims come from our neighborhoods, every corner of our nation, and every part of the globe.

Given the magnitude of human trafficking, combating it will require international effort as well as community action. We hope every community and every individual will raise awareness and fight human trafficking wherever it exists; declaring as one that slavery has no place in our world.

Worker Abuse by Diplomats a Problem, Advocates Say

The prosecution of an Indian consular official in New York accused of forcing her maid to toil for little pay highlights a problem advocates say is all too common - workers for foreign governments who bring along the baggage of human trafficking to the U.S.

Maryland's Domestic Abuse Victims Deserve Better Protections

Past efforts to change the outdated law never got very far in a hidebound legislature, and advocates became so discouraged that they didn't even raise the matter in recent years.
