Saturday, December 8 - Heather Styka
Chicago singer/songwriter Heather Styka's songs are as fresh as they are rooted in the folk and Americana tradition, delivered by a warm and soulful voice. Also a poet and writer, Styka has an instinct for lyrics that are smart and unexpected but never cryptic, analyzing the importance of moments, places, and relationships. In addition to numerous songwriting awards, her 2011 release Lifeboats for Atlantis received critical praise, hitting #3 on the national FOLK-DJ charts. With a distinctive guitar style and a natural, earthy vocal command, Styka gives each song space to breathe, favoring minimal instrumentation. From foot-stomping grooves to whispered hymns, "Heather's unique delivery combines the influences of a fragile Irish air, the warm effervescence of upbeat Americana, soulful country and mournful blues. Her voice ensures these songs hit that place in your chest where emotions reside" (FolkWords). Though unafraid to tackle the darker aspects of human experience, her songs are characterized by a persistent hopeful streak. www.heatherstyka.com

Talking to the Dead (Paperback) By George Noory, Rosemary Ellen Guiley List Price: $14.99 Our Price: $10.49 (Save: $4.50 30%)
Throughout history, people have sought ways to contact the dead and spirits. Such experiences challenge beliefs and often set people on a path of deeper exploration, looking for validation-and ways to have controlled, direct contact. Do spirit communication devices really work? What are the prospects of someday being able to pick up a cell phone or sit in front of a webcam and talk to the Other Side? While proof of contact is still elusive, there is an abundance of tantalizing evidence and experience to inspire people. For the past century, inventors have been inspired by the spirits themselves to create telephone, video, radio, and computers to attempt real-time, two-way communication with the dead and other entities. Talking to the Dead explores the colorful history and personalities behind spirit communications, weaving together spirituality, metaphysics, science, and technology. It examines the idea that new technology can connect to the ancient and universal wisdom of the "music of the spheres"; that contact with the spirit realms can be made through the vibrations of sound.
