These Featured New Books

Through 10-21-2012

Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience
(Hardcover)
By Laurence Gonzales
List Price: $26.95
Our Price: $18.87
(Save: $8.09 30%)

You have survived the crisis-trauma, disease, accident, or war-now how do you get your life back?
The shark attacked while she was snorkeling, tearing through Micki Glenn's breast and shredding her right arm. Her husband, a surgeon, saved her life on the spot, but when she was safely home she couldn't just go on with her life. She had entered an even more profound survival journey: the aftermath.
The survival experience changes everything because it invalidates all your previous adaptations, and the old rules don't apply. In some cases survivors suffer more in the aftermath than they did during the actual crisis. In all cases, they have to work hard to reinvent themselves. Drawing on gripping cases across a wide range of life-threatening experiences, Laurence Gonzales fashions a compelling argument about fear, courage, and the adaptability of the human spirit. Micki Glenn was later moved to say: "I don't regret that this happened to me. [It] has been . . . probably the single most positive experience I've ever had."

God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage
(Hardcover)
By Gene Robinson
List Price: $24.00
Our Price: $16.80
(Save: $7.20 30%)

From the Bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church, the first openly gay person elected (in 2003) to the historic episcopate and the world's leading religious spokesperson for gay rights and gay marriage-a groundbreaking book that lovingly and persuasively makes the case for same-sex marriage using a commonsense, reasoned, religious argument, made by someone who holds the religious text of the Bible to be holy and sacred and the ensuing two millennia of church history to be relevant to the discussion, equally familiar with the secular and political debate going on in America today, and for whom same-sex marriage is a personal issue; Robinson was married to a woman for two decades and is a father of two children and has been married to a man for the last four years of a twenty-three-year relationship.

Super Charged: How Outlaws Hippies & Scientists Reinvented Marijuana
(Hardcover)
By Jim Rendon
List Price: $24.95
Our Price: $17.47
(Save: $7.49 30%)

Marijuana has been illegal in the United States since 1937. Yet, thanks in large part to a loosely connected underground world of breeders, dealers, and smokers, there are currently more than 2000 varieties available. And since 1996, when California first passed legislation allowing for legalized medical marijuana, the underground has slowly surfaced, pushing what was once a decentralized, lawless land closer to the corporate world of business, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
Super-Charged gets up close and personal with the people who have transformed this controversial drug. With personalities and backgrounds as diverse as the plant itself, the growers include a former Silicon Valley software entrepreneur; third-generation residents of Humboldt, California; a publicly traded pharmaceutical company; and the famous marijuana personality Jorge Cervantes. Author Jim Rendon takes readers behind the scenes and into the homes and grow operations of the committed, quality-obsessed practitioners in the international underground industry responsible for creating today's super-charged cannabis.
Ironically, the pioneers who built this illegal industry may one day find themselves out of business in the face of the drug's growing mainstream acceptance. Just how this could come about is part of the incredible story.

Is Your Life Mapped Out?: Your Mind and Free Will vs Destiny
(Paperback)
By David Hamilton
List Price: $17.95
Our Price: $12.57
(Save: $5.39 30%)

These are questions we all ask ourselves, but it's hard to get past conjecture or gut feeling to find any definitive answers. Now, in this groundbreaking book, David Hamilton looks at hard scientific evidence to bring us closer to understanding the balance between the forces of destiny and the power of free will.
Exploring the new scientific research into presentiment - how the mind and nervous system are able to perceive events ahead of time - David examines the origins and nature of consciousness and how the mind influences the experiences of our lives. Drawing on research in such diverse fields as quantum physics, epigenetics, solar cycles, astrology, and even reports of life after death, David shows that there appears to be an element of predetermination in life, but also suggests that there is much opportunity for us to take control of our own destiny, allowing us to shape our lives and our world with powerful results.
