ON SALE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!Underwater Dogs was new for this year and I always get a little panicky when a new product is flying off the shelves (as this one did). We've been burnt more than once when the manufacturer runs out without warning and are left having to disappoint our customers. So I hoarded up a bunch of these to keep that from happening. We've got a few left - they're on sale here

Amazing Dog Facts and Trivia Did you know that... ...the Charles Bridge in Prague (construction began 1357) is decorated with numerous statues & plaques. One plaque shows a guard rubbing a dog's head. It has become popular for visitors to rub the dog to ensure that a spouse will remain faithful. Look how shiny the dog is in the picture here - he's been polished by years of visitor's hands rubbing.
This info (and photo) is from the dog version of our popular (and now SOLD OUT) Amazing Horse Facts and Trivia. Publisher is NOT reprinting Amazing Dog Facts and Trivia, so our stock is limited to what we have on hand. For just $12.99 you can get 192 pages of trivia and pictures of things you did not know about dogs. This is a fun, and interesting book that has all sorts of dog trivia that many lifelong dog lovers will discover that they did not know. And pictures - bazillions of color pictures showing all that stuff you didn't know that you didn't know! And it's written in such a way that folks of all levels of knowledge and experience will find it interesting. Not too elementary - not too technical. There are lots of great training tips, too.
Did you know that... - The oldest dog ever was Bluey, an Austalian Cattle dog who lived to be 29? - The term "Dog Fancying" means breeding dogs for particular features and was coined in the 19th century. - The ancient Greeks believed that the sultry summer heat was caused by Sirius, the dog star, hence the term "dog days". - There are paintings of dogs in the Lascaux caves of France (not just horses!) "Hug" clay plaque
Below half price at just $4.99. This is a Willow Tree brand plaque sculpted by artist S usan Lordi. Regular retail price is $14.50. These are supposed to be discontinued, we bought what we were told was the remaining stock. But they're still showing on the manufacturer's website for full price. We have them on sale for just $4.99 while supplies last here. One of my favorite stories that goes with this plaque is: Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.I rescued a human today.-author unknown

Dog Lover's DISAPPEARING MUD MUG is ONLY $4.99! This is an 11 oz white ceramic mug with a fun twist. It's imprinted all over with muddy paw prints, and the words SMILE! IT'S ONLY MUD. Fill the cup with hot liquid, and the most amazing thing happens. The words & paw prints dissolve away, revealing a pack of smiling dogs. As the cup cools, the words & paw prints reappear. It works over and over again.
The lovely smiling dog photos were sent in by HoofPrints Facebook fans. When the muddy pawprints disappear you'll see:
Colene White's Freckles (a Border Collie) Gina Hyatt's Marshfire Lily (a rescue Dalmatian) Robi Heffington's Clinch (a Corgi) Carrie (a rescued Red Tick Coonhound from The St Louis Senior Dog Project) Caprice Madison's Brownie Jeni Peck's Poudre LeAnne Manning's Gus Gus (a rescue) Ashley Moniz's Nattie (a rescue) Susan Stevens-Clark's Mandy (a Rottweiler) Tracy McDermott's Ginger (a rescue from Humane Society of SE Missouri) Gina Keesling's Lucy (a Jack Russell Terrier) Gina Keesling's Puppy-Girl (a Labrador Retriever)
These sale priced mugs came in from the manufacturer with the brown ink printed a little too thin. You can still read the words without any problem, but the dog faces show through a little bit even with the mug is cool. The wording/pawprint ink disappears correctly when the mug is heated, to reveal the faces in their entirety. 100% of the sales of these goes to Hollow Creek Farm Equine and Canine Rescue. This is the outfit that was instrumental in the rehab of the "star" of one of our very favorite dog books; Vicky Kaseorg's I'm Listening With A Broken Ear.

Sterling Silver Dog Whistle Is this a whistle to call your dog? Or a whistle that IS a dog? Either way it's really cute, and a unique and interesting piece of functional and useful jewelry. Measures almost 2" long and hangs on a knotted adjustable (14"-26") waxed cotton cord. We kind of kept this one a "secret" through the holidays, as we were having trouble keeping stock on them, but we've got plenty now. For more info click here

RECAP - From the last newsletter here
Here's what we talked about last time:
Hoof Problems - a profusely illustrated, hardcover book, under $50 here Story about people watching farriers, and what can happen when they do - here Lots of new business cards added to online farrier directory - check out your state here Magnetic Business Card Calendars for Farriers and Horse Owners on sale here

I wasn't kidding...
they kept the horse on a chain in the back yard.
Last time I talked about the Horses and Hope Calendar, and how the money generated helped to fund grants to geld horses like Silver Gem (his "after" picture is here). He spent 8 years on a chain in someone's backyard. The photos show makeshift fencing, one can only assume that probably because he was a stallion, he was getting through the fence and thus needed to be chained?
Last year, photographer Sarah K. Andrew approached me about HoofPrints helping to produce a calendar using her photos of auction and rescue horses. I'd been a fan of Sarah's work for a long time; continually astonished at her ability to take soulful photos of ordinary (and often unkempt/unattractive) unwanted horses in extremely challenging conditions. She chose One Horse At A Time as the recipient for the funds generated by the calendar. One of the reasons - OHAAT writes "gelding grants". This is funding they've set aside for worthy recipients to pay for gelding stallions, in order to make them more adoptable. Most people wouldn't have given Silver Gem a second look - an unhandled stud-horse at that age would seem to have limited potential to ever be a "good citizen". Horse Rescue United's Anouk Busch thought differently. She negotiated with his owners to purchase him. OHAAT funded his gelding. Anouk and the staff at HRU worked with Gem, and in spite of his late start at training, he proved to be a quick study. Now he's in a good home, with a good life!
Little successes like this make me think of the Starfish Story - when a problem seems so big and so terrible that it almost isn't worth trying to solve - that's when we all need to think of the individuals... instead of the masses. For Gem, it made all the difference in the world.
We're down to the last couple hundred Horses and Hope Calendars. Most of the folks who bought them, bought one. What can $20. do? Is it even worth the bother? I am here to state a resounding YES! So far this year we've dispersed about $50,000. in calendar sales proceeds to One Horse At A Time. They've wisely and judiciously distributed it where it's most needed. If you've not ordered your calendar yet, you can do so here. If you don't already have one, consider adding a 2012 calendar to your order, too. They're only $10.00 and the photos are beautiful - it's a collector's item, for sure.

ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THIS NEWSLETTER
|
Farriers Greeting Cards was started by Gina Keesling in 1986 (in a very small way) to provide helpful promotional materials for farrier husband Rob. Along the way we became HoofPrints.com, too, adding a selection of fun horse and dog products geared toward women of a certain age. This newsletter is emailed to subscribers a few times a month, depending on how often I have something to share. Watch for special sales, interesting stories, uplifting quotes and more.

Viral marketing... it sounds bad, doesn't it? You can ask my husband - a frequent topic around here is that of forwarded emails - and the psychology behind them - just WHAT prompts people to decide; "I am going to send this to everyone I know!".
We receive a lot of them. Some are pretty good, and others are dumb. Dumb in a myriad of ways... Alarmist email rumors that have been around forever - that folks keep sending "just in case it's true" Pictures of someone's butt (or worse) - don't even get me started about the firecracker butt - but at least that one was timely when it showed up around July 4. Christian messages that are uplifting - until you get to the end and you're threatened "if you're not ashamed that you love Jesus, forward this - if you are, then delete." Pictures of cute puppies and kittens (awww)
I enjoy writing these newsletters - and sharing all this stuff with you all. But the fact is, it's also a way to help us stay connected with customers and sell products during the time between catalog mailings (which is only once a year) So I really, really like it when someone new stumbles upon the newsletter and is excited to "discover" our company and the products we offer.
In all my efforts to make the newsletter interesting and forward-worthy - it never occurred to me to JUST ASK you all to send it! Duh. Sometimes the obvious is elusive, I guess. So here goes - my request to ask you to forward our email newsletter to your horsey friends. All we ask is that you please be judicious and only send to folks who might be interested. Otherwise we are no better than the "firecracker butt". Click to get started. (please note - using this form does NOT subscribe anyone to our list - it is a one-time only forward)
