Introducing Dropbox® Enterprise
-Steven J. Best, Esq.
Dropbox rolled out an enterprise version of its web based file-sharing network this month to combat concerns that it is not a secure platform for businesses, including law firms.
Dropbox has been criticized by a variety of sources that it is not secure and therefore not a trusted consideration for business use. Prior to this release, Dropbox was one of the top blacklisted consumer apps by MobileIron, based in Mountain View, CA.
Historically, Dropbox users are individuals. Looking at their brief history, it is clear that Dropbox evolved primarily as a way for consumers to collaborate and store data in a cloud-based folder system. That is a start, but business users, such as law firms, need more.

MS Word Tip of the Month - Typography Matters
Your computer's operating system comes with a boatload of font choices. These are the fonts available from within Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, most "system" fonts are either boring, overused, or don't look good on today's high-resolution screens or when printed with today's higher-quality printers.
If you want your Word documents to look extraordinary on-screen and on paper, pay attention to typography. The place to start is Matthew Butterick's Typography for Lawyers web site. There you can read about typography and why it matters to lawyers. You can also buy his book, now in its second edition, if you want to learn more.

The Surface Book - Impressions After One Month
- Scott Bassett, Esq.
Last month I wrote about Microsoft's new Surface Book. At that time, I had it barely a week. It has now been over a month. I used the Surface Book's detached screen "Clipboard" function during an appeal argument. I also used the included Surface Pen to annotate PDFs and take notes on-screen at a CLE conference. In standard laptop mode, the Surface Book is used daily in my appellate practice.
There were a few minor glitches related to power management and the software command to detach the screen from the keyboard base. Fortunately, all seem to have been solved by software and firmware updates issues by Microsoft.
The Surface Book remains the best laptop I have used. So much so that when it was time to update the laptop buying guide I write for Michigan's Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), the Surface Book dethroned the Lenovo ThinkPad as my top recommendation.

Meet the Team - Bryce Phillips
|
Affinity Consulting loves to help improve the lives of our customers. We thought you might enjoy getting to know about the lives of some of our team members who help make that happen. Each month we will feature another member of the Affinity Team. Get to know us!
Meet Bryce Phillips, Legal Technology Consultant. Bryce has been a part of the Affinity Team since 2011 when he joined the IT Department in our Ohio office. As he says, "a little luck and a lot of hard work" has brought him to being an integral part of Affinity's Document Management Team. Bryce loves telling everyone that he "hasn't worked a day since 2011" when he began helping our clients realize their potential through the training and software we provide. Outside of Affinity, Bryce and his wife Katie enjoy spending time with their 10 year old son, Brennan, at their lake house. They spend most of their summers there boating and cooking out. Bryce also enjoys coaching and helping out on his son's little league team, winning 2 local championships.
Bryce's favorite Affinity story would have to be getting stuck at a client site in South Carolina with Greg Bray and Paul Unger. We were trapped by sleet/ice and after our flights were all cancelled. We rented a car and drove 13 hours home through what I can only describe as the "apocalypse on the freeway." Cars and semis were stuck in the ditches or in the median. Some were simply abandoned right in the middle of the freeway. There's nothing like surviving a harrowing experience to get to know your co-workers really well!
