January, 2015

Dear Friends,

What a strange winter we are having... zero degrees one week, then 50's the next!  To top it off, how did Martin Luther King day totally sneak up on me?!

Sometimes it is hard for the little ones to understand the significance of MLK day, fortunately there are lots of special activities going on in the area that will keep your kids engaged and entertained as they learn.

Each place below has a special day planned and if you follow the links you are bound to find something appropriate for everyone in your family.
Warm regards,
Carol and Jessica - Publishers

MDG Crafts: Paper plate fun!

Paper Plate Snowman Garland:  Take making faces to the next level - make a garland of family members or friends!

What you need:
  •     small paper plates
  •     pipe cleaners
  •     pom poms
  •     googly eyes
  •     orange paper
  •     markers
  •     yarn
  •     scissors
  •     a hole punch
  •     glue
What you do:

1. Use a hole punch to punch two holes, one on each side of the paper plate.

2. Make snowman earmuffs by inserting the ends of the pipe cleaner into each of the holes, and bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to hold it in place. Then, use glue to attach two pom poms.

3. Use glue to attach googly eyes and a nose made from orange paper. Then, use markers to add the rest of the facial features.

Allow all the paper plate snowmen to dry completely. Then, hang the snowmen from a piece of yarn. I used little clothespins, but you could also use a hole punch to make holes in the tops of the paper plates.

 MDG LINKS WE LOVE:
Kaboom, Safe Playgrounds for All!
When 3-year-old Faith Tinoco was starting school back in 2002, her parents were worried that their daughter, born with Down syndrome, wouldn't be able to play along with the other kids at Melody Park Christian School, in Salinas, California. A year earlier, there would have been cause for concern: The school's playground equipment was outdated and inappropriate for Faith's needs.

But thanks to an organization called Kaboom!, Faith's school had just acquired a new playground -- one that was completely safe and handicapped-accessible. Since 1995, Kaboom! has teamed up with corporate partners to create 546 playgrounds in cities and towns across the country at an average cost of $55,000 each. It has also improved 1,500 existing playgrounds to make them safer.

To get involved visit www.kaboom.org.
