May, 2013
Dear friends,

Well, this morning found me online printing out forms, making copies of physicals, writing checks and making a quick trip to the post office so that all of this paperwork arrived at its correct destinations as soon as possible.  In other words, just like every other parent, the shock that summer program registration needs to be tackled right away hit.

For you parents like me, we have produced a special Education, Summer & Camps supplement.  Its got tons of great resources and ideas.  CLICK HERE to see our online version and look for print copies locally in the near future.  You'll see even more ideas as you read down.  So many good things to choose from!

And finally, of course, we would be remiss if we did not include mention of Mother's Day.  Our wishes are that you all have the day of your dreams and enjoy every single second of it!

With warmest regards,

MDG CRAFT:  Planting Wellies Craft!

What a wonderful way to introduce young children to the joys of gardening!

These Wellies (better known as boots in the USA) make delightful containers that youngsters can personalize to use as planters for spring flowers.  They'll take pride in picking a special spot and caring for them all on their own.

What you need:

  • Wellies (Boots - which you can almost always find affordably at discount stores)
  • Broad paint markers (ask at your craft store for the exact right ones that won't crack or flake)
  • Planting soil (or yard soil!) and gravel
  • Young flowers from the garden store

What you do:

First get the practical out of the way - cut slits in the bottom of each Wellie to allow for drainage (this is your job parents!).  Then its time to let your child to go to town with their creativity and the broad paint markers! Give artwork plenty of time to dry.

Once dry, the willing helper can fill the Wellies about two-thirds full of gravel and then its FINALLY time to plant.  Help your child break up the flower's soil ball a bit, separating the roots, and then plant!
