CH 24 "SPECIALNESS AND SEPARATION" VII. "SALVATION FROM FEAR"
See him as what he is that your deliverance may not be long. A senseless wandering, without a purpose and without accomplishment of any kind, is all the other choice can offer you. Futility of function not fulfilled will haunt you while your brother lies asleep, till what has been assigned to you is done and he is risen from the past. He who condemned himself, and you as well, is given you to save from condemnation along with you. And both shall see God's glory in His Son, whom you mistook as flesh and bound to laws that have no power over him at all.

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio
The body is a fence the Son of God
imagines he has built to separate
parts of his Self from other parts. It is
within this fence he thinks he lives, to die
as it decays and crumbles. For within
this fence he thinks that he is safe from love.
Identifying with <its safety>, he
regards himself as <what his safety is>.
How else could he be certain he remains
within the body, keeping love outside?
The body will not stay. Yet this he sees
as double safety. For the Son of God's
impermanence is "proof" his fences work,
and do the task his mind [assigned] to them.
For if his oneness still remained untouched,
who could attack and who could be attacked?
Who could be victor? Who could be his prey?
Who could be victim? Who the murderer?
And if he did not die, what proof is there
that God's eternal Son [has] been destroyed?
The body is a dream. Like other dreams,
it sometimes seems to picture happiness,
but can quite suddenly revert to fear,
where every dream is born. For only love
creates in truth, and truth can never fear.
Made to be fearful, must the body serve
the purpose given it. But we can change
the purpose [which] the body will obey
by changing what we think that it is for.
The body is the means by which God's Son
returns to sanity. Though it was made
to fence him into hell without escape,
yet has the goal of Heaven been exchanged
for the pursuit of hell. The Son of God
extends his hand to reach his brother, and
to help him walk along the road with him.
Now is the body holy. Now it serves
to heal the mind that it was made to kill.
You will identify with what you think
will make you safe. Whatever it may be,
you will believe that it is one with you.
Your safety lies in truth and not in lies.
Love is your safety. Fear does not exist.
Identify with love, and you are safe.
Identify with love, and you are home.
Identify with love, and find your Self.

DAILY LESSON
L e s s o n 262 Let me perceive no differences today.
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio
Father, You have one Son. And it is he
that I would look upon today. He is
Your one Creation. Why should I perceive
a thousand forms in what remains as one?
Why should I give this one a thousand names,
when only one suffices? For Your Son
must bear Your Name, for You created him.
Let me not see him as a stranger to
his Father, nor as stranger to myself.
For he is part of me and I of him,
and we are part of You Who are our Source,
eternally united in Your Love;
eternally the holy Son of God.
We who are one would recognize this day
the truth about ourselves. We would come home,
and rest in unity. For there is peace,
and nowhere else can peace be sought and found.

ACIM Edmonton - Sarah's Reflections

LESSON 262 Let me perceive no differences today.
Sarah's Commentary:
When I was in Sedona studying and practicing the Course, I attended a workshop given by Nicola Perry called, "My Journey as a Course-Based Healer." At her workshop, she told her story of her journey to becoming a spiritual healer. She described the events of her life that led her to become a healer and then described what happens in her mind when she offers healing to others.
The significant thing she discovered was that she had to dismiss someone's bodily identity, in her mind, if she were to join in a healing session. She had to get beyond differences such as male, female, likes, dislikes, interests---anything that has to do with our earthly identities. Every single bit of normal perception that determined who she think someone was had to be released in order to see no differences. Her intent was to see the person as a true Son of God, their true Self, their true nature, and their formless spirit. However, she cautioned this is something that can't be forced by trying to mentally create such a picture and superimpose it on the person while shoving all of the usual perceptions to the back of your mind. The first step is to relax, become aware of the perceptions of someone that we are holding, ask for help in letting them go, and reaffirm that we are the same One Self. "Why should I give this one a thousand names, when only one suffices? For Your Son must bear Your name, for You created him." (W.262.1.5-6) No one is a stranger. Everyone is part of me and I of them. To recognize this is to know the truth about ourselves. It is only in recognizing our sameness that we can know peace. Peace is only in unity and not in differences. We spend so much of our time comparing and measuring ourselves against others. We see ourselves better than or less than others, based on our judgments of them and of ourselves. These all constitute our special relationships that depend on differences, whether they be differences based on special love or special hate. We see someone having what we don't have and what we think we need, and in the special relationship our goal is to try to get from the other what we think will fill our perceived lacks. Our perception of differences is a way to see the other as sinful so we can see ourselves as innocent of that sin. And what is their sin as we see it? It is that they have stolen from us what is rightfully ours and now they owe us. If they don't give us what we consider should be ours, we hate them for it.
Every relationship, whether of hate or love, is a special relationship. It is by definition one of differences. The ego uses these relationships in our lives to project guilt for our decision to separate from God. Fundamental to all of our special relationships is seeing each one as a body, but that is not who we are. Our reality is not that of a body.
The focus of this Lesson is on our unity. The recognition of shared interests is a condition of the Teacher of God, according to Jesus as stated in the Manual for Teachers. It is to recognize that there is only one Son. Clearly our eyes show us there are many, yet today we are asked to recognize that we all share the same Christ-Self and are truly one. Differences are only apparent in the illusion. Now we need to use every situation as an opportunity to ask for help to see beyond these differences and recognize that we share the same purpose and the same goal. The purpose of every relationship is for healing of the mind. We do this by taking responsibility for our judgments and being willing to release them. Beyond these judgments is the truth waiting for our acknowledgment.
Although we still do see differences, we are choosing today to allow our judgments to go so we could see our brothers beyond them. The body is all about defining our seeming separate state and maintaining the differences between us, but the body can be turned to a holy purpose. We can choose to put the body to the purpose of healing. We now have a choice as to how we use the body. It can be used for pleasure, for attack, for getting what we think we want, or for extending love and forgiveness, thus being an agent of the Holy Spirit. What the body is used for is simply a matter of choice. The choice is ours. Peace is found in joining with our brother and recognizing that we share the same purpose. "You cannot enter into real relationships with any of God's Sons unless you love them all and equally. Love is not special." (T.13.X.11.1-2)(ACIM OE T.13.IV.30) I had a situation recently where I was making judgments about the behavior of someone whom I felt was acting in a way that was self-serving and selfish, looking after her own needs at what I thought was at the expense of others. In the process, I felt that she was less than honest and forthright. I then asked myself if those were aspects of myself? I had to look at my own self-serving and selfish behavior that I preferred to see in her. When I am truly willing to take responsibility for my own judgmental thoughts, I trust they will be healed as I turn them over to the Holy Spirit. My judgments were projections of my own mind that I preferred to see in her so that the sin was hers. What this allowed me to do is to claim my innocence and my comparative saintliness. As I released my misguided perceptions to the Holy Spirit, I was able to have a lovely, open connection with her and recognize that like me, she is innocent.
The truth about everyone is that they are innocent no matter what the body seems to be doing. When we can accept that it is truly all a dream, we can see more clearly that everyone shows up in our own dream to play the role we assigned to them for our own healing. There are no accidents in salvation. Whatever we need to experience in order to heal, we do experience. It can all seem so unfair when we forget that it is our own dream.
Yes, we still do react to events in the dream as if they were real, and we have feelings and reactions to these events that seem to come from outside of our own minds. Thus, we like some events and feel good about them, and dislike others and feel very sad and hurt. Either way we experience ourselves as victims of the events that seem to come at us. In other words, we see ourselves as the effect of the world. When we recognize that it is all our own dream, we can see it all comes from our own minds. Mind is the cause and the world is the effect. Thus, we have power over what seems to be happening to us. "For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. Let them be as hateful and as vicious as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recognize it is your dream." (T.27.VIII.10.5)(ACIM OE T.27. IX.86) We are free to give everything all of the meaning it has for us. In and of itself, it has no meaning. What we are seeing is really only our own thoughts that we have given away. What I was seeing in the person, with whom I was having difficulty with in my dream, is clearly only my own thoughts. Once I realized I could take responsibility for them, only then was healing possible. Why do we put these thoughts out there in the first place? Jesus tells us it is our guilt that we place outside of ourselves. It is our desire to keep our individual selves separate. We think, if we put what we think we have done wrong onto others and not us, they will now have the sin in them. Whenever we are afraid to admit these are our own repressed thoughts, we see them in others. It is true that some of the things I see another doing may not be things that I have done in form. My actions may not be the same, but my thoughts are. I have not murdered anyone in form, yet I have had murderous thoughts. I may not be poor, but I may hold thoughts of lack, self-protection, self-centeredness, and greed. I may not be addicted to alcohol or drugs, but I may have other addictions. We share the same one ego mind, which contains all of our misperceptions of who we are. We project our thoughts onto others in order to get rid of them in ourselves. Of course this does not work, because we just take on more guilt. Until we can see this is the case, we will continue to project our guilt onto others in the false belief that we are getting rid of it in ourselves. We do it because we still value our separation. When we disown our thoughts, in this way, they show up in our dream figures, but they are never disowned. It is just a way to keep our own guilt intact.
Attack and judgment can only come with differences and separation. Why would I attack a part of myself? Watch your judgments today and, when differences arise, do your forgiveness work. Remember to affirm the truth that this is my brother who is a part of me and whom I love as I love myself. Affirmations will never overcome the ego, but they remind us of the truth. If we are not experiencing this as true for us, we will be motivated to see that our perceptions of our brother are wrong. Now we can ask the Holy Spirit for help to see our brother as He sees Him. If God loves my brother and I judge him instead, I am proclaiming that I am separate from my brother and my will is different from God's.
Today you might apply the Lesson by reminding yourself to see in everyone your dearest friend, while actively watching for the judgments you make that contravene this thought and be willing to be wrong about the way you see your brother. This is how we do our part as an invitation to the Holy Spirit to bring this experience into reality for us, so we can truly know there are no differences. Until the experience is there, our effort and discipline are required. It may seem like the discipline it takes and the consistency required is difficult, but all of a sudden there will be an understanding. Recently a friend described this as her "Helen Keller moment."
Helen Keller was blind and deaf and unable to communicate. Her teacher was teaching her to sign and Helen was good at repeating what she was taught because she was very bright. However, there was no real understanding until the moment when all of a sudden she made the association with the sign for water and the actual feel of the water. Then everything clicked for her and she became very excited. It is the same for us when we do this work. It may not click for a long time as we do our practice until all of a sudden there is a deep insight and we get it. This may happen again and again and is very powerful in the moment of realization. So keep up with the practice and know this moment is available when the mind is ready. Readying the mind requires willingness, vigilance and determination to practice watching our thoughts and doing the forgiveness work.
Love and blessings, Sarah

TEXT Paused for Weekend
Chapter Twenty-Four
49 Before your brother's holiness the world is still and peace descends on it in gentleness and blessing so complete that not one trace of conflict still remains to haunt you in the darkness of the night. He is your savior from the dreams of fear. He is the healing of your sense of sacrifice and fear that what you have will scatter with the wind and turn to dust. In him is your assurance God is here and with you now. While he is what he is, you can be sure that God is knowable and will be known to you. For He could never leave His own creation. And the sign that this is so lies in your brother, offered you that all your doubts about yourself may disappear before his holiness. See in him God's creation. For in him, his Father waits for your acknowledgment that He created you as part of Him.
50 Without you there would be a lack in God, a Heaven incomplete, a Son without a Father. There could be no universe and no reality. For what God wills is whole and part of Him because His Will is One. Nothing alive that is not part of Him, and nothing is but is alive in Him. Your brother's holiness shows you that God is one with him and you-that what he has is yours because you are not separate from him nor from his Father.
51 Nothing is lost to you in all the universe. Nothing that God created has He failed to lay before you lovingly as yours forever. And no thought within His Mind is absent from your own. It is His Will you share His love for you and look upon yourself as lovingly as He conceived of you before the world began and as He knows you still. God changes not His Mind about His Son with passing circumstance, which has no meaning in eternity where He abides and you with Him. Your brother is as He created him. And it is this that saves you from a world that He created not.
52 Forget not that the healing of God's Son is all the world is for. That is the only purpose the Holy Spirit sees in it and thus the only one it has. Until you see the healing of the Son as all you wish to be accomplished by the world, by time, and all appearances, you will not know the Father nor yourself. For you will use the world for what is not its purpose and will not escape its laws of violence and death. Yet it is given you to be beyond its laws in all respects, in every way, and every circumstance, in all temptation to perceive what is not there and all belief God's Son can suffer pain because he sees himself as he is not.
53 Look on your brother and behold in him the whole reversal of the laws that seem to rule this world. See in his freedom yours, for such it is. Let not his specialness obscure the truth in him, for not one law of death you bind him to will you escape. And not one sin you see in him but keeps you both in hell. Yet will his perfect sinlessness release you both, for holiness is quite impartial, with one judgment made for all it looks upon. And that is made, not of itself, but through the Voice that speaks for God in everything that lives and shares His Being.
54 It is His sinlessness that eyes which see can look upon. It is His loveliness they see in everything. And it is He they look for everywhere and find no sight nor place nor time where He is not. Within your brother's holiness, the perfect frame for your salvation and the world's, is set the shining memory of Him in Whom your brother lives and you along with him. Let not your eyes be blinded by the veil of specialness that hides the face of Christ from him, and you as well. And let the fear of God no longer hold the vision you were meant to see from you. Your brother's body shows not Christ to you. He is set forth within his holiness.
55 Choose, then, his body or his holiness as what you want to see, and which you choose is yours to look upon. Yet will you choose in countless situations and through time which seems to have no end until the truth be your decision. For eternity is not regained by still one more denial of Christ in him. And where is your salvation if he is but a body? Where is your peace but in his holiness? And where is God Himself but in that part of Him He set forever in your brother's holiness that you might see the truth about yourself set forth at last in terms you recognized and understood?
56 Your brother's holiness is sacrament and benediction unto you. His errors cannot withhold God's blessing from himself nor you who see him truly. His mistakes can cause delay, which it is given you to take from him that both may end a journey that has never been begun and needs no end. What never was is not a part of you. Yet you will think it is until you realize that it is not a part of him who stands beside you. He is the mirror of yourself wherein you see the judgment you have laid on both of you. The Christ in you beholds his holiness. Your specialness looks on his body and beholds him not.
57 See him as what he is that your deliverance may not be long.
58 Would you not gladly realize these laws are not for you? Then see him not as prisoner to them. It cannot be what governs part of God holds not for all the rest. You place yourself under the laws you see as ruling him. Think, then, how great the love of God for you must be that He has given you a part of Him to save from pain and give you happiness. And never doubt but that your specialness will disappear before the Will of God, Who loves each part of Him with equal love [and care]. The Christ in you can see your brother truly. Would you decide against the holiness He sees?
59 Specialness is the function which you gave yourself. It stands for you alone, as self-created, self-maintained, in need of nothing, and unjoined with anything beyond the body. In its eyes, you are a separate universe with all the power to hold itself complete within itself, with every entry shut against intrusion and every window barred against the light. Always attacked and always furious, with anger always fully justified, you have pursued this goal with vigilance you never thought to yield and effort that you never thought to cease. And all this grim determination was for this-you wanted specialness to be the truth.
60 Now you are merely asked that you pursue another goal with far less vigilance-with little effort and with little time and with the power of God maintaining it and promising success. Yet of the two, it is this one you find more difficult. The "sacrifice" of self you understand, nor do you deem this cost too heavy. But a tiny willingness, a nod to God, a greeting to the Christ in you, you find a burden wearisome and tedious, too heavy to be borne. Yet to the dedication to the truth as God established it no sacrifice is asked, no strain called forth, and all the power of Heaven and the might of truth itself is given to provide the means and guarantee the goal's accomplishment.
61 You who believe it easier to see your brother's body than his holiness, be sure you understand what made this judgment. Here is the voice of specialness heard clearly, judging against the Christ and setting forth for you the purpose that you can attain and what you cannot do. Forget not that this judgment must apply to what you do with it as your ally. For what you do through Christ it does not know. To Him this judgment makes no sense at all, for only what His Father wills is possible, and there is no alternative for Him to see. Out of His lack of conflict comes your peace. And from His purpose comes the means for effortless accomplishment and rest.
