CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
"SPECIALNESS AND SEPARATION"
III. The Treachery of Specialness

"You are not special. If you think you are and would defend your specialness against the truth of what you really are, how can you know the truth? What answer that the Holy Spirit gives can reach you when it is your specialness to which you listen and which asks and answers? Its tiny answer, soundless in the melody which pours from God to you eternally in loving praise of what you are, is all you listen to. And that vast song of honor and of love for what you are seems silent and unheard before its "mightiness." You strain your ears to hear its soundless voice, and yet the Call of God Himself is soundless to you."

GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER

If I forget my goal, I can be but
confused, unsure of what I want, and thus

conflicted in my actions. No-one can

serve contradicting goals, and serve them well.

Nor can he function without deep distress

and great depression. Let us therefore be

determined to remember what we want

today, that we may unify our thoughts

   and actions meaningfully, and achieve

only what God would have us do today.

Father, forgiveness is Your chosen means

for our salvation. Let us not forget

that we can have no will but Yours today,

and thus our purpose must be Yours as well,

if we would reach the peace You will for us.

WHAT IS SIN?
What Is Sin
<AUDIO> <VIDEO>
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER*

What is 'Iambic Pentameter'?

Sin is insanity. It is the means

by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks

to let illusions take the place of truth.

And being mad, it sees illusions where

the truth should be, and where it really is.

Sin gave the body eyes, for what is there

the sinless would behold? What need have they

of sights or sounds or touch? What would they hear

or reach to touch? What would they sense at all?

To sense is not to know. And truth can be

but filled with knowledge, and with nothing else.

The body is the instrument the mind

made in its striving to deceive itself.

Its purpose is to strive. Yet can the goal

of striving change. And now the body serves

a different aim for striving. What it seeks

for now is chosen by the aim the mind

has taken as replacement for the goal

of self-deception. Truth can be its aim

as well as lies. The senses then will seek

instead the witnesses to what is true.

Sin is the home of all illusions, which

but stand for things imagined, issuing

from thoughts which are untrue. They are the "proof"

that what has no reality is real.

Sin "proves" God's Son is evil; timelessness

must have an end; Eternal Life must die.

And God Himself has lost the Son He loves,

with but corruption to complete Himself,

His Will forever overcome by death,

love slain by hate, and peace to be no more.

A madman's dreams are frightening, and sin

appears indeed to terrify. And yet

what sin perceives is but a childish game.

The Son of God may play be has become

a body, prey to evil and to guilt,

with but a little life that ends in death.

But all the while his Father shines on him,

and loves him with an Everlasting Love

which his pretenses cannot change at all.

How long, oh Son of God, would you maintain

the game of sin? Shall we not put away

these sharp-edged children's toys? How soon will you

be ready to come home? Perhaps today?

There is no sin. Creation is unchanged.

Would you still hold return to Heaven back?

How long, oh holy Son of God, how long?

LESSON 257
Let me remember what my purpose is.

What is our purpose? Why are we here? What is our time here about? Is it about getting what we want in the world? Is it about striving for things, for recognition, for relationships, for power, or is it for healing of our minds through forgiveness? The course teaches over and over, that the purpose of our time here, if it is to be used well, is only for forgiveness. It is our function, our purpose and our reason for being here. There is no other purpose to be here except to wake up from this dream; to remember who we really are and in that to know peace and joy.

Our true purpose is already in the mind. It is the truth that we have chosen to forget as to who we are. This truth is fully present all the time but while we are invested in focusing on meeting our perceived needs here, we will be conflicted. Part of us wants to know the truth and part of us wants to stay invested in the material world. But with our focus entirely on our worldly existence we experience great depression, deep distress and we suffer. Even though we try to do everything we can to avoid suffering and to seek for ways to mitigate it, all this does is distract us from these feelings. None of our strategies to find happiness in the world will work because the problem is not in the world and neither is the solution there. The only thing that brings distress is our identification with the ego. And the only answer to that is to remember who we are. We do that through forgiveness. When we hold grievances, we suffer. But when we use the world as a classroom for helping us to learn to forgive, then we are using it for the purpose of waking up to the truth of who we are.

We all say we want happiness. But when we identify with the ego, this independent self, then we think we know what will bring us the happiness we seek. And our focus now is on the idols that we have substituted in place of our reality. Jesus describes idols as "a body or a thing, a place, a situation or a circumstance, an object owned or wanted, or a right demanded or achieved, it is the same." (T.29.VIII.1.9) Further he says that "idols are unrecognized as such, and never seen for what they really are." (T.29.VIII.1.3)That is the only power they have.If we saw that idols did not deliver the happiness we seek through them, then we certainly would not pursue them. We would pursue happiness where it truly lies, which is in liberating ourselves from this dream. Idols simply confirm our false identity. They prop up who we think we are and what we think we need "to complete our little self, for safety in a world perceived as dangerous, with forces massed against your confidence and peace of mind." (T. 29.VIII.2.3)

And so our goal is mixed between wanting to pursue the truth on one hand and wanting to pursue our idols on the other. This creates conflict in our minds, as we try to walk both paths, that of the ego and that of the Holy Spirit. Another way to look at this conflict is that we want to hold a grievance against someone, and justify our upsets yet we still want to know God. It is a reflection of our split minds.  Until we step fully into our purpose, we will be in conflict. As an example in my life, I look after my mother who is 97 and has lots of care needs that occupy my time. While I see it as an opportunity for forgiveness there are times I feel imposed upon and resentful that my sister lives a distance away and is rarely here to visit. Recently she was here and questioned everything I was doing and, in my mind, implied that there was more I could do. Not only did I express my anger to her, but also tried to build an alliance against her with my other sister by sharing my story with her and further justifying my anger.

On reflection, I realized that I had set all of this up by not hearing my sister's cry for love. Clearly she was expressing her concern for out mother's care but I was choosing only to hear criticism coming at me. As Jesus says "If he speaks not of Christ to you, you spoke not of Christ to him." (T.11.V.18.6) Instead of hearing her call for love and seeing that "what your sister did, did not occur," I made the error real. I took her comments personally. Jesus reminds us that to forgive something we have made real, is called "forgiveness to destroy." Real forgiveness shows us that nothing real has happened. If I see what she did as real and true, then I can't forgive it. Now I need to bring my illusions to the truth and let the Holy Spirit give me His interpretation of the situation. It means that I must admit that I was wrong in the way I was interpreting her behavior. When I remember that my mind is the cause of it all, then I can change my mind about the way I see every situation. It is all my own projection. Can you see how the ego can get absolutely outraged by this? But if we listen to the ego, we stay in hell. That is why our focus today is to "let me remember what my purpose is."

Jesus says that only forgiveness can bring us happiness. And that is our only purpose. If I am experiencing unhappiness today, then it is because I have chosen with the ego. Only I can make myself unhappy. If we are suffering in any way today, Jesus reminds us that the suffering is just hiding an unforgiving thought. (W.P.I.98) There is no form of pain that forgiveness cannot heal. So we need to recognize that any unhappiness we are experiencing today can be healed through forgiveness. And that is our purpose here. It is the only way we can reclaim who we really are. Trying to be loving only obscures this function. We can't overlay lovingness onto thoughts of worry, anxiety, distress, dis-ease, anger, frustration. Trying to be positive in the face of these kinds of feelings simply overlays a spiritual veneer over the problem. Instead, we need to honestly look at these unforgiving thoughts, accept responsibility for them and be willing to turn them over to the Holy Spirit.

Today's lesson sets our intention to remember our purpose throughout the day. It is to accept Atonement for myself (the recognition of my guiltlessness), by being willing to have the   obstacles removed to this knowing. When we forget that this is our goal, then we get conflicted in our actions and start focusing on our own ideas of what we think will make us happy. But this can only result in further conflict. 1.1) And we can't "serve contradicting goals and serve them well."  (1.2) When we try to do that, this just leads to distress and depression. (1.3)

So today calls for determination. What would God have you do today? Yesterday's lesson reminded us that the only way we will hear this guidance is through the means given to us to hear His Voice. That is through forgiveness. We each have a curriculum that is set up by the mind in this world that offers us myriad of opportunities for forgiveness. Whatever is coming in your face today, stand back and look at it as an opportunity for forgiveness.  If everything that seemingly happens is just a projection of our own minds, then the movie of our lives is just what we need to see and reclaim responsibility for.

If we are not living our lives on purpose with our goal, then we will be confused and unsure of what we are. "If you are to be conflict-free yourself, you must learn only from the Holy Spirit and teach only by Him."  (T.6.III.2.2)    As we step on this path and let the Holy Spirit in, there will be increased conflict. "This step may appear to exacerbate conflict rather than resolve it, because it is the beginning step in reversing your perception and turning it right-side up." (T.6.V.A.6.4) The reason for this is that we now have conflicting goals and are trying to walk two different paths. We want what the ego has to offer, and its seeming pleasures, while also wanting to awaken from this dream. But this can be very painful. When we are split between the goals of our spiritual focus and the goals of the ego, confusion reigns. Not only that but Jesus says that we will experience "deep distress and great depression."  (1.3) The only way to resolve the conflict is to choose to step on one side with the Holy Spirit and stay focused on our purpose.

So if one minute we are in a state of bliss, peace, spiritual joy and the next minute we are gossiping, angry, or attacking we will be in great distress. This is an example of pursuing two paths, that of the ego and that of the Holy Spirit. And it causes us great consternation. It is not a happy experience until we learn to step over on one side more and more consistently. It is in this state of conflict between two thought systems where we all currently live. So the answer is to continually look at our minds and bring forgiveness as God's chosen means for our salvation. As our awareness increases and we can see more clearly how our minds are split, we will be less and less tolerant in following the ego's religion. This means that we will be much quicker in asking for help to release our grievances and will be more willing to step back from our investment in our thoughts and see how silly they are. The only way out is to use everything that comes up in your day for forgiveness and peace.

You may want to read Chapter 30 V. "The Only Purpose" It reminds us that the only purpose of the world is forgiveness. When that is the case, then the "world becomes a place of hope because its only purpose is to be a place where hope of happiness can be fulfilled." When we see it this way, then there is nothing bad that is happening. It is all for undoing of our conditioned minds so that we can wake up to who we really are. It is all for our healing. It is all hopeful because we detach from the drama, watch our thoughts and recognize ourselves as the dreamers of this dream rather than the figures in the dream.

We are assured that we will go beyond our function of forgiveness in this world, to a place of perfect happiness. This is the real world, of Heaven on earth where we will still see the idols but have no interest in them and no longer want them. You may be noticing that that is the case more and more in your own life where the things that seemed to hold a lot of interest for you are simply falling away. I no longer have the same kinds of attachments as I have had in the past. It is not because I have given them up but simply because they have just fallen away.   These transitions are mostly gentle, because at some level of the mind we are ready for them.   We go at our own pace when we are ready to take the next step without fear. We take each step in joining with each other and releasing our separate interests. "An ancient hate is passing from the world. And with it goes all hatred and all fear. Look back no longer, for what lies ahead is all you ever wanted in your heart. Give up the world! But not to sacrifice. You never wanted it. What happiness have you sought here that did not bring you pain? What moment of content has not been bought at fearful price in coins of suffering? Joy has no cost." (T. 30. V.9)

There is an interesting piece I was reading by Byron Katie which relates to this lesson. She says that when we hurt, we are actually mentally out of our business. And it is important to recognize that there are only three kinds of business in the universe: God's, yours and mine. Whose business is it if an earthquake happens? God's business. (not that God created it but that it is beyond our business) Whose business is it if your neighbor down the street has an ugly lawn? Your neighbor's business. Whose business is it if you are angry at your neighbor down the street because he has an ugly lawn? Your business.

Life is simple-it is internal. Thus, if my sister has judgments of my caregiving, it is none of my business.

Check your thoughts as you go through your day and see whose business is being attended to. Maintain vigilance over your mind, and observe how quickly you judge, give advice, look for alliances, cling to grievances, everything that ultimately brings more suffering.  Our responsibility is to mind our own minds and use what comes up in our minds for forgiveness reminding ourselves always, that our will is one with God's Will and when we choose Him as our goal we will increasingly release the goals that keep us invested in the illusion. What goals do you hold today that are in competition with your only goal for God? Can you feel the tension this creates in your life? Now we have a choice. It is to get back to our purpose.

Chapter Twenty Four

Specialness and Separation

III. The Treachery of Specialness

12 Comparison must be an ego device, for love makes none. Specialness always makes comparisons. It is established by a lack seen in another and maintained by searching for and keeping clear in sight all lacks it can perceive. This does it seek, and this it looks upon. And always whom it thus diminishes would be your savior had you not chosen to make of him a tiny measure of your specialness instead. Against the littleness you see in him, you stand as tall and stately, clean and honest, pure and unsullied by comparison with what you see. Nor do you understand it is yourself that you diminish thus.

13 Pursuit of specialness is always at the cost of peace. Who can attack his savior and cut him down yet recognize his strong support? Who can detract from his omnipotence yet share his power? And who can use him as the gauge of littleness and be released from limits? You have a function in salvation. Its pursuit will bring you joy. But the pursuit of specialness must bring you pain. Here is a goal that would defeat salvation and thus run counter to the Will of God. To value specialness is to esteem an alien will to which illusions of yourself are dearer than the truth.

14 Specialness is the idea of sin made real. Sin is impossible even to imagine without this base. For sin arose from it out of nothingness; an evil flower with no roots at all. Here is the self-made "savior," the "creator" who creates unlike the Father and which made His Son like to itself and not like unto Him. His "special" sons are many, never one, each one in exile from himself and Him of Whom they are a part. Nor do they love the Oneness Which created them as one with Him. They chose their specialness instead of Heaven and instead of peace and wrapped it carefully in sin to keep it "safe" from truth.

15 You are not special. And that vast song of honor and of love for what you are seems silent and unheard before its "mightiness." You strain your ears to hear its soundless voice, and yet the Call of God Himself is soundless to you.

16 You can defend your specialness, but never will you hear the Voice for God beside it. They speak a different language and they fall on different ears. To every special one a different message, and one with different meaning, is the truth. Yet how can truth be different to each one? The special messages the special hear convince them they are different and apart-each in his special sins and "safe" from love, which does not see his specialness at all. Christ's vision is their "enemy," for it sees not what they would look upon, and it would show them that the specialness they think they see is an illusion. What would they see instead?

17 The shining radiance of the Son of God, so like his Father that the memory of Him springs instantly to mind. And with this memory, the Son remembers his own creations, as like to him as he is to his Father. And all the world he made and all his specialness and all the sins he held in its defense against himself will vanish as his mind accepts the truth about himself as it returns to take their place. This is the only "cost" of truth: you will no longer see what never was, nor hear what makes no sound. Is it a sacrifice to give up nothing and to receive the love of God forever?

18 You who have chained your savior to your specialness and given it his place, remember this: He has not lost the power to forgive you all the sins you think you placed between him and the function of salvation given him for you. Nor will you change his function, any more than you can change the truth in him and in yourself. But be you certain that the truth is just the same in both. It gives no different messages and has one meaning. And it is one you both can understand, and one which brings release to both of you. Here stands your brother with the key to Heaven in his hand held out to you. Let not the dream of specialness remain between you. What is one is joined in truth.

19 Think of the loveliness that you will see within yourself when you have looked on him as on a friend. He is the enemy of specialness but only friend to what is real in you. Not one attack you thought you made on him has taken from him the gift that God would have him give to you. His need to give it is as great as yours to have it. Let him forgive you all your specialness and make you whole in mind and one with him. He waits for your forgiveness only that he may return it unto you. It is not God Who has condemned His Son. But only you, to save his specialness and kill his Self.

20 You have come far along the way of truth-too far to falter now. Just one step more and every vestige of the fear of God will melt away in love. Your brother's specialness and yours are enemies and bound in hate to kill each other and deny they are the same. Yet it is not illusions which have reached this final obstacle that seems to make God and His Heaven so remote that they cannot be reached. Here in this holy place does truth stand waiting to receive you both in silent blessing and in peace so real and so encompassing that nothing stands outside. Leave all illusions of yourself outside this place to which you come in hope and honesty.

21 Here is your savior from your specialness. He is in need of your acceptance of himself as part of you, as you for his. You are alike to God as God is to Himself. He is not special, for He would not keep one part of what He is unto Himself, not given to His Son but kept for Him alone. And it is this you fear, for if He is not special, then He willed His Son be like Him, and your brother is like you. Not special, but possessed of everything including you.

22 Give him but what he has, remembering God gave Himself to both of you in equal love that both might share the universe with Him Who chose that love could never be divided and kept separate from what it is and must forever be. You are your brother's; part of love was not denied to him. But can it be that you have lost because he is complete? What has been given him makes you complete, as it does him. God's love gave you to him and him to you because He gave Himself. What is the same as God is one with Him. And only specialness could make the truth of God and you as one seem anything but Heaven and the hope of peace at last in sight.

23 Specialness is the seal of treachery upon the gift of love. Whatever serves its purpose must be given to kill. No gift that bears its seal but offers treachery to giver and receiver. Not one glance from eyes it veils but looks on sight of death. Not one believer in its potency but seeks for bargains and for compromise that would establish sin love's substitute and serve it faithfully. And no relationship that holds its purpose dear but clings to murder as safety's weapon and the great defender of all illusions from the "threat" of love.

24 The hope of specialness makes it seem possible God made the body as the prison-house which keeps His Son from Him. For it demands a special place God cannot enter and a hiding-place where none is welcome but your tiny self. Nothing is sacred here but unto you and you alone, apart and separate from all your brothers, safe from all intrusions of sanity upon illusions, safe from God, and safe for conflict everlasting. Here are the gates of hell you closed upon yourself, to rule in madness and in loneliness your special kingdom, apart from God, away from truth and from salvation.

25 The key you threw away God gave your brother, whose holy hands would offer it to you when you were ready to accept His plan for your salvation in place of yours. How could this readiness be reached save through the sight of all your misery and the awareness that your plan has failed and will forever fail to bring you peace and joy of any kind? Through this despair you travel now, yet it is but illusion of despair. The death of specialness is not your death but your awaking into life eternal. You but emerge from an illusion of what you are to the acceptance of yourself as God created you.

A Course in Miracles, original editionPocket Edition ~ Text

The ACIM Pocket Edition Text is available.

The Text volume is the companion to the popular ACIM Pocket Edition Workbook/Manual published by Course in Miracles Society and contains the complete and unabridged Text portion of A Course in Miracles - Original Edition as it was completed by Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford in 1972.

We call it a "pocket edition" because the book is designed to go anywhere with the student-it is only 8" x 5 " and just less than 1" in thickness.

Price: $14.95
