As the summer winds down, the publishers wind up.  Fall is when the most anticipated books of the year come out. From the look of things, we have a lot to be excited about.

What impresses me most this fall is the breadth of great choices in fiction: there are exciting picks for men and women, young and old. Check out four titles below sure to pique the interest of any fiction lover.

Check back with us in two weeks for more of the best fiction books this season has to offer. - Andrew, Head Book Buyer

The Nix by Nathan Hill
Signed Copies available for a limited time!

Nix (n): A Norwegian spirit disguised as a white horse, which after sitting upon, plunges both itself and the rider over the nearest cliff to both their deaths; see also: loved ones who are inevitably destructive and disappointing.

Set in both our own time and the raging 1968 riots of Chicago, The Nix is a story about childhood abandonment across two generations that goes on to tackle issues of love, addiction, and ghosts. A sprawling saga about how the things we love the most are, in the end, those that hurt us the deepest. As every character gets a chance to tell their story, the subtle way their lives weave together is a testament to Hill's strength as an emerging author. Satirical, sharp, sometimes heartbreaking, and so socially relevant, this book is everything. If you buy one book this summer, let it be The Nix- Jaclyn

The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore
From the author of The Sherlockian and
screenwriter of The Imitation Game!

Beautifully written historical fiction of the battle between Westinghouse and Edison for the light bulb patent, and all of the secrets, backstabbing and mysteries that went along with it. I absolutely loved this book. It was fascinating, educational, quick and just plain fun. The interplay between Edison, Westinghouse and Tesla, told through the eyes of Westinghouse's twenty-something lawyer, was fun to read. - Lindsey

I Will Send Rain by Rae Meadows
Signed Copies available for a limited time!

As I read, I Will Send Rain, I found myself out West in the 1930's as The Dust Bowl storms began.  Annie Bell is struggling to keep her home, body, and family free from layers of dust that reappear as fast as they are wiped clean.  Her husband has constant dreams of rain thus convincing him to prepare for it, her teenage daughter is blinded by love, her young son suffers from dust pneumonia, and now an admirer is forcing Annie to question her own ethics and being.  I was moved by the characters, the historical background, the heartache, and the simultaneous longing and complacency that fill each page and make this a beautiful story.  - Lori

A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny

Inspector Armand Gamache is back in a new mystery from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny!

An old, mysterious map found in the walls of a local bistro sets off a mystery that Gamache, as always, finds himself at the center of.  This time, as a suspect. Following the mystery of the map, Gamache is led to four young cadets in the Surete academy and a dead professor with a copy of the old, odd map. Check out the latest installment in one of R.J. Julia's most popular mystery series. - Andrew

What does your September look like? If you're like many of us with children, it's packed with the beginning of school and all the busy-ness that comes with that. Afternoons, evenings, and weekends can quickly fill up with sports programs, music lessons, homework, and the ever-present effort to have some down time.

Carving out time to bring your child to an author event may be challenging, but we believe that when children meet authors something pretty amazing happens - something wholly unique from what they experience in the classroom, on the playing field, or during a musical recital.

Hear what Karen Rosenthal, our Children and Young Adult Events Coordinator, says about the effect that meeting an author can have on children.

We have an incredible line up of author events this fall - something for every age - and we're hoping that you are able to fit one or more of these special events into your schedule.
