adultsAdult News - Summer Reads Part Two!

Chances are you've plowed through all the fantastic books we told you about
in an earlier newsletter. Lucky for you (and us), there has been no shortage of good reading material this summer!

Below are a few more recommendations to get you through August, and the hazy remaining days of summer; we hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close

Despite the recent inundation of media coverage of our 2016 presidential candidates, we still think Jennifer Close's latest is an absolute must-read this summer. Beth and Matt, a married couple new to the D.C. metro area, find that every facet of their marriage is tested when they attempt to tackle the politics and parties in our nation's capital. But it's not all serious business - it's also very, very funny. - Mary

by Lisa Scottoline & Francesca Serritella

This one is from our favorite mother-daughter writing team! Lisa and Francesca tackle a wide variety of topics, including online dating, style and fashion, and, of course, the contemporary mother-daughter relationship dynamic. If you're looking to laugh, look no further, this one is hilarious. - Brian

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

Here's the setup: Travel journalist Lo Blacklock witnesses a passenger fall overboard on a luxury cruise liner. But, according to the manifest, all passengers are accounted for. If you're going on a cruise this summer, be sure to pack this spine-tingler in your luggage. And if you're NOT going on a cruise, this book will likely make you glad that you aren't. Perfect for anybody in need of a creepy mystery! - Brian

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra
Reading a book of Russian historical short stories may not seem like summer reading, but I can tell you that Anthony Marra presents these brilliantly! Each story is fascinating on its own, yet there is also a subtle connection between all of them. The Tsar of Love and Techno is newly out in paperback, which makes it easy to toss in the beach bag!  - Lori

Dimestore by Lee Smith
One of my all time favorite books is One Writer's Beginnings by Eudora Welty. Now, another southern writer has come along with a memoir that has me just as charmed, delighted, and impressed. Lee Smith's Dimestore is like taking a lazy beautiful ride down the Mississippi River or sitting on your front porch with your smart, hilarious sister, aunt or mother. I laughed, and was touched and thrilled to spend a few hours listening to Lee Smith tell her story of growing up in Appalachia, becoming a writer and being a sassy, irreverent woman of today - navigating life's joys and sorrows. Fantastic! - Roxanne

Big kids love read aloud books, too!

No need to give up this special activity just because your child is entering the tween years! Here are just a few reasons to keep this cherished ritual going well into their teens.

Reading aloud:
  • Builds vocabulary.
  • Exposes kids to genres they might not pick up on their own.
  • Kids listen on a different level than they can read, so it's a great opportunity to expose them to more sophisticated books.
  • It's fun! (Who doesn't enjoy sharing a good book?)
