January 2016
Dear Readers,

"We could be heroes/just for one day"

In just 8 words, the late David Bowie gave super power to the Individual and gave a whole generation permission to dream big. More recently, media outlets have brought sharply into focus the every day heroes all around us.  Therefore, it doesn't surprise me that upstairs in the Kids Room, 2016 is full of superheroes--but take note: these are not your 5-year-old's comic books.

This year's American Girl of 2016 is Lea, whose first 3 books of courage and adventure are written by Lisa Yee.  This same author will be bringing us Wonder Woman at Super Hero High (DC Super Hero Girls) which follows a diverse team of 7 high school aged superhero girls in training.

Also, the incomparable Stan Lee brings us the second in his Zodiac series, The Dragon's Return. His fans will love moving from his graphic style into this gripping novel.  And speaking of graphic novels, this genre has begun to mature, taking its place as a respected medium (think plays vs. novels).  Well-known books such as The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman are being reformatted as graphic novels to take advantage of what this style can bring to the story.

And in the midst of all this heroism, even little superheroes need a bedtime story to wind down.  One of our favorites coming out this year is 10 Little Ninjas, a counting book.  Sodream big little superheroes, even if it's just for one day.

See you upstairs,
