Master Plan Workshop, Help Reshape Future of West Town, Aug 27, 2 pm to 4 pm
Officials from the West Town Chamber of Commerce and West Town SSA #29 have set in motion an extensive new initiative that involves the community's help in reshaping the future of the growing West Town commercial landscape.  By employing a 5-step strategy laid out over the next year that takes into account the ideas, skills and aspirations of local residents, the 5-Year Master Plan intends to strengthen the vibrant business district.  Currently underway is Step 1, Connecting West Town.  The goal of Step 1 is to connect West Town community members and have a conversation about what everyone can do to help make West Town a better place.  Within this initial stage, there is a series of 5 sessions that are free and open to anyone who resides within West Town boundaries.  The August session at Defibrillator Gallery includes topics like:  What businesses do you want to see open here? What infrastructure would you like built? What sort of developments should we encourage? This is the time to come share what you think could make West Town one of the best places in Chicago to live, work, shop, and visit.  Residents and business owners are welcome to attend.

In A Wonderful Dream, Sherald employs race to explore the evolution of one's identity as a reaction to external directives.

Carlos Rolón/Dzine: Ace of Fades, thru Aug 27
In a new site-specific installation, produced for the gallery's "on the wall" project space for the summer of 2016, Rolón re-creates the communal atmosphere of an urban barbershop. Through appropriated signage, commercial lighting, and the artist's own mirror paintings, the gallery's street-facing façade evokes the variety of customers that enter a barbershop, seeking kinship while also carving out their own personas.

Special event on Aug 25
In conjunction with his window project, Rolón has recruited barbers from Chicago's own Bladez Of Glory barbershop to create custom fades and graphics on selected participants in the gallery, literally altering the viewer's experience from spectator to performer. For the chance to be chosen for a FREE custom fade by our talented barbers, please RSVP for our next event here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/carlos-rolondzine-presents-ace-of-fades-tickets-25999812138

Reality Check, Exhibition is on display starting Aug 26
"Reality Check." Formalism, domesticity and technology, nature, and the legacy of Soviet oppression. Eight artists explore new modes of expression impacted by ideological freedom and open exchange with the West, launched by 1991 Ukrainian independence.  "Reality Check" is being organized in conjunction with 25th anniversary of Ukrainian independence commemorations and features artists who have been active from 1991 up through the present. All of the artists are of Ukrainian descent [third and fourth immigration waves] and working with contemporary artistic developments. The year 1991 is serving as a springboard for launching new aesthetic ideas and addressing philosophical issues, directly or indirectly responding to Ukraine's newfound situation.
