First Week of Advent, Nov. 29-Dec. 5

Advent allows a step back from our preoccupation with economic worries and the cares of the world. It raises our eyes to see the new liturgical year as the hopeful dawn of salvation that will ultimately reach completion with our participation. Fear about the "end of the world" gets replaced by excitement about the fullness of God's Reign. Your "ransom," "liberation," and "redemption" are at hand!

~John Rausch, glmy, from The Promise of Light:

Candle reflection As we do each year, we'll be sending out reflections and resources which we hope will help you and your community to pray, study and act for peace with justice this Advent season. We'll send a Pray-Study-Act (PSA) e-bulletin each week through Advent and the start of the new year, highlighting some resources for you to use for the upcoming week. For additional Advent resources, we hope you'll visit our Advent resource page on the website. We'll be adding more to the page each week throughout the season. If you have something you think others would be interested in, send it my way and I will try to include as many as I can!

In peace,

PRAY: Nov. 29, First Sunday of Advent
By John Rausch, glmy

"But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads, because your redemption is at hand." (Lk 21:28)

Fear sells newspapers and grabs our attention with every news broadcast. Terrorists might attack, hackers may control the Internet, a gallon of gas may double in price! Shrill talking heads on TV and radio constantly inflate every troublesome situation into catastrophic tragedy. The gullible get scared. People of faith, by contrast, click the "off" button....

* If you have not ordered an Advent booklet this year and would still like to do so, you can still download the electronic version and have it before Advent starts.
STUDY: Joint statement on Syrian refugees from national Catholic organizations
The following is a joint statement by Catholic organizations regarding the Syrian refugee crisis. Pax Christi USA is an endorser. The statement is being sent to Members of Congress.

Dear Congressperson,

As national Catholic organizations advocating for justice and peace, we speak from the experience of our members who serve on the ground around the world with those who are suffering, including refugees fleeing from violent conflict. We know their stories, their heartbreak, their fear, and their persistent efforts to survive, even flourish.
We repudiate the recent attacks in Beirut, Paris, Baghdad, Raqqa and in too many other places around the world. We know families and communities are suffering and our prayers are with them. We deeply believe that violence will not prevail and that the memories of those who have been killed will inspire sustainable solutions to such horrific violence.
We cannot, however, let our grief and fear blind us to the desperation and despair of another group of victims: the millions and millions of refugees fleeing for safety from Syria...

ACT: Plan now for a deeper,
more meaningful Advent season

Take the time now, this week, and over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, to plan how you will mark this season in a way that honors the values and principles for which you stand. Come up with an Advent plan that sets aside time and opportunity for prayer, study and action, whether for yourself, your family or your community. Consider using one of the resources we feature on our Advent webpage, like Hundred Dollar Holiday by Bill McKibben or Unplug the Christmas Machine by Jean Staeheli. Purchase and download the e-reader version of our Advent booklet, The Promise of Light: Reflections for Advent and Christmas 2015, and incorporate the reflections into your family dinners or morning prayer. Locate a local organization which can use your help and make a weekly commitment to serving and accompanying those who need help during this season. Commit to undertaking the action item which will be featured each week in these PSA e-bulletins.

Too often, Advent passes before we have time to take full advantage of the benefits the season offers us. It is important to plan now to live as deeply and as meaningfully the fullness of this time of year, lest we get swept up in all that is secondary or even superfluous to what the season really calls us to. So carve out a half-hour now, and write down what you want your Advent to be and how you want to witness to the peace of Christ.
