Who To Thank For Freedom

"Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?"

In July of 2014, we conducted a random survey of 131 people and asked the following question:

True or False?
The goal of America's founders was to establish a government that would give certain unalienable rights to its citizens.

The result can only be described as alarming since only 15% answered it correctly!  This would indicate that 85% apparently do not know or hold the conviction that liberty comes from God, as is clearly stated in The Declaration of Independence, the founding document of this nation. Jefferson would be alarmed as well, because the context of the quote above also contains these words:

"Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever."

I tremble for my country as well. As a nation, we have forgotten where our freedom comes from and as a result it is disappearing.

On this Thanksgiving Day in this land of liberty, we have many to thank for the freedoms we enjoy, not the least of whom are those who have fought, those who have died, and those continue to fight to preserve it. But I pray that we will remember that liberties are the gift of God and give thanks well.

Happy Thanksgiving!
