The Duty of Every Christian
Gouverneur Morris
1752-1816

"Religion is the only solid basis of good morals; therefore education should teach the precepts of religion and the duties of man towards God."
           - Gouverneur Morris,, Notes on the Form of a Constitution for France

_____________

Morris, one of America's Founding Fathers, is widely credited as the author of the preamble of the Constitution and is known as the "Penman of the Constitution."
This quote from Gouverneur Morris provides yet another example of the Christian influence upon America's founding. From this brief statement we can see at least three things regarding Morris' thoughts on morality.

1)  Morals don't just happen; they have a source.
Morals come from the Divine Creator and are the basis and foundation of order for the created.

2) Morals must be maintained.
Morals are not transferred automatically from generation to generation; they must be taught and imparted.  This is because man is basically evil and, left to himself, will gravitate toward evil and moral breakdown.

3) Teaching and maintaining morals is man's duty toward God.
This is part of the work we are called to as Christians. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we were created in Christ Jesus for good works. In the "Great Commission," Jesus told us to teach people to observe all that He commanded (see Matt. 28:20). It is our Christian duty to teach the precepts of God.

Morality and Freedom
Morality (the laws of God) are the foundation of freedom. History has shown that, when the laws of God disappear from the human heart and from the culture, chaos ensues and oppressive governmental systems arise to bring order to the chaos. Freedom is the casualty. The propagation of morality has been scrubbed from our educational systems and replaced by the humanistic concept that truth and morals are relative; there is no absolute right or wrong. As a result, millions of people have no connection to truth and teachings on morality, yet our duty toward God remains. It is our duty to establish these connections that people may learn truth and morality.
